Hope you can make it Tony. Sometimes a man to man heart to heart really helps. I know I was kind of a handful and my dad worked my butt off them we had a talk about how we are supposed to act as it can affect the future. Big picture type stuff. I know every kid is different and hope you get it all figured out

Colby...I have had MANY man to man talks ...he seems to get it a little at a time ...this is the boy we took in when he was 11 ....now he is staring 17 down .... so many blessings, but many heartbreaking issues as well....

I remember my dad having that talk with me way back when. I didn't really listen to him. I turned out alright but I realize that if I had listened to him, a lot of my life would have been easier lol. But hey i came across this article today.

    http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/deer-hunting/2014/05/get-elk-shape-phase-one?src=SOC&dom=fb

How's everyone doing with getting in to shape? I need to really buckle down and get started. Work has been busy as crap and with us trying to buy a house, free time is slim to none right now.

GPS suggestions that won't break the bank? Are older units on Ebay ok? I see many for < $50.

I need to start running and also start hiking in the woods with weight on my back. Luckily I'm in decent shape due to my job. I sell hundreds of cases of pop a day and have to lift, wheel, and lift again over and over. Now just need to get back into my college soccer shape and I'll be good to go. Lol

    Few things:

-HIGHLY recommend GPS (actually I'd say it's required). Even the most basic just to mark your vehicle, and especially if you get a kill down. Good Luck finding your meat if you have to go back without a GPS:) I bought used one on ebay for $30 my first year and worked fine. Went with mid-level Etrex 20 two years ago, nice having the topo, but I do not pull it out much except to mark vehicle and any point I want to find again. You can spend all day with your head down staring at GPS and miss the elk standing 20yds away:)

-Tony...good Luck...probably no harder job in life than to try and guide someone that age...you're a good man.

-workouts: build body from the ground up. Big muscles are nice and all - but if your legs can't keep you going up and down for a whole week, you won't get to use those big arms anyway. Running to help with legs and puffing air, then backpack hikes with hills...those two for sure...then if any time core/back when you can. I would guess my average day is 8-10 miles hiked, less for others...so bottom line, make sure you can at least walk around in boots with pack on for 6-8 miles:) (although I've never trained with a pack more than 5 miles due to time)

-above all, make sure to practice shooting with your daypack on.

Here's a thought....bring him elk hunting with you. A week in the Rocky Mountains chasing screaming bulls can do wonders for the sole, for anyone.

I'm down 15 lbs since March, my job has me up and down a ramp from a semi trailer carting food to for up to 2 hrs at a time. Delivered 22,000lbs on Tuesday all by hand on a 2 wheel cart. We're hiring if anyone wants in. Lol

Everytime there's a flare up on this thread it gets me re-living past camps...

Here's a few more memories to keep the fire going here...

    All from 2012 Trip:

Here is the ultimate goal - grilled fresh elk ka-bobs over charcoal - with some of Waid's Excellent seasoning he shared...(my buddy shot a calf that last morning)...ate these as we broke camp

More proof that there are some nice ones running around...the TX boys found this while hunting that week

Shorts and sun in the last pic...two days earlier me and my buddy chased a gorgeous bull and two cows just inside tree line, as the snow fell...he bugled every time I called, closest I got was 45-50yds, no open shot...that is an hour or so that I'll never forget!

I'm up 15 lbs since February... Officially stopping the focus on weight training and cutting out protein all together as a supplement unless I feel the recoveries start to kill me again. I just have to starve myself to maintain weight it seems.

Heading out for a 6 mile run now!
