Nice...is that cow/spike only...or does that include limited bull also?

That's for the OTC archery elk tag. Most units are cow/spike only but there are places and times (like extended season) where that tag is good for any bull. I think a lot of out-of-staters don't mess with it because it is confusing... Much easier to just go after the spike/cow units.

LE Elk are more $ and require lots of preference points. Utah is about the polar opposite of IL when it comes to giving out tags. ;) A lot of Utahns hunt in CO/ID/WY/AZ because getting a tag here can be a challenge. On the upside, there are a few trophy quality critters running around out here..... or so they tell me.

A three day weekend somewhere will run you $600+ easily... Tags and hunting in general are expensive, but so is anything fun/traveling... I'd rather get 1-3 weeks camping in the Rockies then 5 days at the beach roasting for the same price.

This is how I look at it. Our 4-5 trips to Florida are far more expensive than my 10-16 day trips to CO. If only I could talk my wife into never having to go to the beach again. I had our vacation planned this summer to go stay a week in my uncle's cabin(in the Rockies). Instead we are going to Florida......again.

Do most people have 6 arrows in their quiver when elk hunting? More or less? Probably stupid question, just was wondering what you guys do. Will be my first time elk hunting.

I just have my normal 5(that's all my quiver holds). Always keep a few extras at the truck though.

I carry five and one of those is a field point or small game point for grouse and small game I may happen upon.

I've had to eat tag soup three times now and I'm hoping that will all change this Fall, I just wish I could pack up and move to Colorado and live in that beautiful state for the rest of my life(the Rockies does that to ya).
I'm not one for going to the beach, unless my arm is twisted, I'd rather be in the country and mountains anyday! Coming to America paying $600 for a tag, £800 for a flight from UK and whatever spending money I can save is worth every bit of time, money and effort spent making it happen...... I just love hunting Elk!!

I also take 5 arrows, one of which is a judo point.

Same as others - I have a 5 arrow quiver. I wouldn't hesitate to carry 3 - exactly twice in my 20 years of bowhunting have I needed a second arrow - both times to finish a spine shot deer that I guess I could have used knife if needed.

I would recommend a couple arrows stay in your case, as I've taken a couple good spills in this rocky terrain, surprised each time that I had not snapped my arrows. There is always a target around camp for shooting or sighting in if needed. No lighted nocks as stated.

I with you on that one Dave. My wife loves the beach (and I don't mind a lazy day in the sun every once in a while), but luckily she love the mountains too as do my kids which has made for some good vacations to the Rockies...I can't get enough mountain time...or Elk hunting...

Out here I carry my Beretta 92F on my hip with the 15 round magazine. I know CO has a 'high capacity' mag restriction... but that only applies to buying or selling right?

Edit: 15 round magazines are okay, right? I'll leave any higher cap. mags at home. ;)

You would be able to open carry. Open carry is legal while hunting in Colorado.

I think the problem lies with carrying across state lines....

Yeah read up on the laws for the states you will be traveling through or leave it locked in a travel safe unloaded separate from ammo and I think you would be ok through all states. Look at hand hun laws.com for each state

From what I've read getting it there is no problem as it would be locked in a case and the ammo separately locked up as well which is good for every state I'm going through as long as I hold a permit in my home state.....my confusion is my NY permit is not accepted in CO and they issue no non resident permits.....this would make concealed carry out....open carry is where i lose it....if they don't accept my permit how can i legally have a hand gun in my possession that is not locked up for transport?

I will be doing much more reading and verifying before I come to a decision on bringing mine but I'm glad this came up here...I'll feel naked without one on I can tell you that

    So Colorado requires a permit?

Because open carry in Colorado is legal while hunting. Also you can carry locked and loaded in your vehicle in Colorado with no permits for protection. You just can not conceal carry when not in your vehicle
