Sorry I was away for a while chilling in Mexico but I'm back now. They post the draw results at different times I usually check in June and see what all I drew. You can check on their website after they are posted. Time to start shooting my bow and humping my pack around on jogs. Some time in August I will post pictures and a list of what all I'm putting in my pack. Don't know if that will help or not but will give people an idea of what I take a long. Others should do the same that way it will help decide if we are missing something or really don't need something that is just extra weight.
Well I ordered a new pack today. I didn't really need one but this one has been appealing to me. It's a cabela's elite scout has 1500-1800 cubic inch capacity. What really drew me to it was it has ventilation in the back. I can't stand hiking in the moutains with a sweaty back from my pack. It has a two liter water bladder, hip straps, belt pockets for gps, and a pull out blaze orange cover if your packing a head out or something. I don't know that it would hold a head or quarter in the strap in area but we shall see.
Colby - that is the pack I bought in 2010 and have used the last 4 years - cannot say enough great things about it. It has been the perfect daypack for me, very comfy, and I can shoot great with it on, and low profile...perfect daypack IMO. My only issue as I've mentioned, is that on all 3 packouts of elk - we took the deboned meat out on the spot and never returned to vehicle to get pack frame. The good news is that I've had 80lbs on that pack and it carried it no problem and no tears or stretching (very well made!). The bad news is that daypacks with no frame were not designed for that and it felt like I was giving a 200lb buddy a piggy-back ride...but again, very impressed that I've strapped 50lbs of meat, skull/antlers, plus my 25+lbs of daily items already in pack...and carried them out. I'm considering a framed pack due to this...but at the same time - this will always be an awesome "go-to" daypack for me, I will not sell it. So what I'm saying is...shoot that elk closer to the road
Matt, glad to hear a good review on it. Like you my frame pack doesn't see much use. I always plan on taking the tenderloins out first with whatever pack I have (leaving the quarters hanging from tree branches) if I'm by myself then coming back with my frame pack to haul the quarters out. If others are there or coming maybe they can grab the frame out of my pickup as I'm guessing they will park where I had too but we will see how it plays out with so many people it should be much easier than the elk I've packed out in the past. Oh won't shoot unless with in 100 yards of an easily accessable road or herd the elk towards my pick up and shoot him standing beside it. I've got this figured out LOL
I was hoping to get to unit 45 for a few days after my other hunt up there and hunt Mule Deer but it looks like a won't be able to. You guys have a blast though and take out some big bulls. I'm already planning the 2015 OTC hunt there though and it will be a yearly hunt for me at camp No Name.
No sweat - I'm sure I'll run into you again at Camp No Name... ...I'll be waiting for pictures of your bull this Sept!
I see a charge for 374.00 on the credit card... so I guess my application went through. Now I wait. Hopefully, you guys won't regret the open invite. heh heh heh...
Awesome Christine....can't wait to see ya there!.....i know you have stories! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Awesome. I hope everyone that wanted to try and draw a deer tag applied. I applied for mine yesterday but its for down here in the plains.
Lord willing this fall will be my 5th straight...so yes - it doesn't matter to me if it's even or odd year - I got it bad for those elk. On the "off" years of Wills big camp, could even consider different weeks also. Last year we went 2 weeks earlier than usual (the week before the muzzleloader season)...due to schedule conflicts, and I ended up getting my first. Although I would always prefer the last week that Will does his camp as you are closer to rut and bugling...
A few of us put in for more Elk preference points last night. Not sure if/when I will use, but they are still reasonable to purchase...so why not. I do hope CO considers going to point banking as they have been discussing for this next regulation period. Currently in CO, if you draw any entry tag with your first choice you lose all your points. Which means if I want to hunt a unit that only take 1 or 2 points to draw I would lose all 5 of my points...so this actually keeps me from trying those areas now as I mine as well build up to a great unit at 12+ points. The suggested point banking would allow you to only have to give up the points required to obtain that tag. Meaning I would only lose 1-2 points for a lower end unit, and keep my other 3-4 to keep building. Hope the state really considers it. I feel it's more money in state's pocket as some may try a tag or two that they wouldn't consider if they have too many points currently. It could also help with the whole "point creep" issue of some tags taking 20+ years to obtain. Curious to see what happens...until then, I'll just keep getting PP as they are reasonable...and maybe one day I'll cash them in.
What do you guys do for water, do most people bring water and fill up at camp or do people bring filters or capsules to use when your out on the mountain.
That depends on you, what you want, and how deep your plans allow. One can load in water and fill up the pack for a good day from camp and if used sparingly may last two days if the overnighter occurs. The filtration kit is wise if you are more apt to head out and not look back.
Ill be bringing bottled and i have a bladder for my packs for field use Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
I'm with ya. I love Elk hunting and unit 45 works great for OTC. I put in for more points on mule deer and elk this year so someday we'll have to get in on another unit.
