For those you tip up fisherman...what kind of line are you running as leader? I've got 4 lb mono rigged right now, but had a bad break off today. I don't want to go too heavy and spook off weary trout and crappie. But, I hate break offs on bigger fish. I've been contemplating putting on some braid but I'm not sure how it performs through the ice. What do you guys use? I'd love some recommendations. I could encounter anything from brookies, Browns, rainbows, and Lakers, to bluegill, crappie, yellow perch, white perch, pickerel, and large and small mouth bass. I don't want to go too heavy and deter smaller more weary fish like brookies, rainbows, and crappie, but I'd like to have a good shot at bringing a big pickerel or other toothy critter in. Suggestions? Thanks in advance!
I'm not a tip up fisherman but I would say focus your tip ups on the big/toothy guys and catch your panfish with your jigging rod /dead stick.
Never been! 10lb line for our tip ups... We have large northerns in almost every lake though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Kansas does have some great fishing, but I'm not there right now. My wife and I are working a 3 month contract up in New Hampshire where I'm originally from. This state doesn't have great deer hunting at all...but for moose, bear, turkey, and fishing, it's awesome. Our contract should bring us through the salmon run, turkey season, and smallmouth spawn. I'm pumped! But I do miss kansas a lot and can't wait to fly back out there soon for shed season, turkey season, and white bass spawn. Hopefully I can lump all three of those together. I'll be a bit late on sheds, but as long as the squirrels and mice don't find em first they should still be where they fell when I arrive.
Picked up a couple tungsten jigs today. I plan on tipping these with worm, shiner, maybe a trout egg, or wax worm going after panfish or trout. Any of you guys have experience with those combinations? Im hoping I didn't just waste $$$
Nice fish everyone! 15"...?? Mounting it I hope? Went out with my mom, brother, and a buddy in a family friends Ice Castle. Ended up taking home a total of 15 sunnies/crappies. Sunnies we kept were well over the size of my hand (9-10in) and the biggest crappie was 12.5". My moms is obsessed with taking pics, here are some from the trip. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Jeff, IMO Trying to go with one line weigh for all those species isn't going to work. With that being said I would suggest a 8# fluorocarbon. If the northerns in the lakes your fishing range on the smaller side. There's not much you can do to prevent breakoffs, small norhterns = teeth close together. I would also suggest to experiment with different line types and weights. Also if the lakes your fishing don't receive much pressure you'll be able to get away with using a heavier line.
Got back from the Northwood's late yesterday. Caught some fish nothing spectacular, I got 8 walleyes Saturday no legal's. We didn't get a single legal one all weekend. A few of the guys got a some nice perch with the biggest being just under 14" A couple guys also caught a few cisco. Overall a good weekend fishing wise the 3.5 hour ride back after the game not so much.
I can only hope that one day I can afford something as nice as that... Sleeps 6, 9 holes, stove/oven, satellite radio, and a bathroom.
Another skunk today...we ran shiners on tip ups shallow, deep, and suspended. We jigged, we tried worms, we even resorted to trying powerbait...nothing! We had one flag and no hook up, and I had a good bump jigging, but couldn't connect. This was a small 40 acre pond stocked with brookies and rainbows. It also has yellow perch, pickerel, largemouth, and smallmouth. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, I thought for sure I'd be eating trout for dinner. I probably won't get back on the ice until Sunday.
Just have to keep at it! I'm heading to leech lake this weekend for walleye and perch! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I'll be headed to Minnewaska Friday-Sunday this week and then Thursday-Sunday next week. Finally get to do some ice fishing for longer than a day. Pumped!
