It has been a pretty good year so far, but my big bucks have continually skirted me just out of bow range. Well last Monday, I decided to go to a stand I have not hunted since Thanksgiving week. It was warm and windy, but a front was moving through after dark so I was somewhat hopeful. I saw tons of squirrels, and bobcat, but no deer. Finally, as light was fading I saw a deer move between two trees about 90 yards away. He slipped through the oak bottom slightly angling towards me. When he got about 60 yards away, he stepped behind a tree and DISAPPEARED! Finally after about two minutes I saw him walking right at me. Every three of four steps he would stop and look around. At 55 yards he stood broadside for about three minutes. I was beginning to think it was not going to happen. Finally he walked towards my lane and of all things stopped broadside in the middle of my shooting lane at 43 yards. My shot was tad high as I dropped him in his tracks but the three blade chisel tip Rage clipped the spine, and both lungs and buried in his off shoulder. I put another one in him immediately but once I got down I realized it was not necessary. He measured right at 129, so he is my 2nd P&Y in 3 years here in LA. My kids had a blast helping me load him on the four wheeler, and skinning. They love the field dressing part, which I don't know is a good thing or not! Still have to the 31st of January and a couple of larger bucks on camera so who knows. In case anyone wants to know. I am shooting a Bowtech Experience, 29 inch draw, 72# with Easton FMJ and Rage 3 blade Chisel Tip. Happy New Year to all.
Nice buck and good looking kids. The more you let them try stuff now the easier it is to keep them interested in hunting. Beefie
Very nice buck! Congrats. Did those brow tines grow short like that, or did he bust them off fighting? Either way, great deer,
Great buck and cute kids! I love when kids know what meat actually is, and all the steps that need to happen before it ends up wrapped in a foam tray! It's scary that some kids, and even some adults, don't fully understand!
Thanks guys! To answer from earlier, yes brow tines were just short. The two oldest hunt with me quite a bit so I hope their interest continues. I love spending time in the outdoors and with my kids, it just makes it sweeter. Funny how kids make us big softies! Would not have it any other way. My wife and I have truly been blessed with our crew. I hope I feel the same way when I have three in college in the same time!
