Spent the evening out at the dove field with my 7 year old. He had a blast with the old red rider and fetching up a limit of birds. He loves to.get em after I shoot one. Next year he may give the 20 guage a try.
Saturday is opening day of youth season here. My 8 year old and I will be in the blind together, hoping to get her first kill on camera. Should be a fun weekend.
Yes there is no minimum age limit for the youth season, max age is 16. Under 16 must be accompanied by a licensed hunter over 18. This will be her second year hunting, last year she sat with me 6-7 times but we never got anything close enough. She is a pretty good shot but I limit her to 30ish yards no matter what weapon she is hunting with. This year I moved her blind set-up and am allowing her to hunt a spot that should give her a 20 yd or less shot, and judging by recent trail cam pics, we should have no problem filling her tag this weekend. Matt: YES I would love it if she was able to shoot FC, he would be an amazing first deer for her. She really really wants to kill a buck... lol
Awesome pics PT!!! So last night Addy and I were discussing our Sat morning hunting plans and she asked me if she could use Grandpas crossbow (Bought my Dad a crossbow last year to get him back int the woods longer) she has shot it a bit but has always struggled with the scope. Last year she shot a muzzleloader with open sites and a light load. So I was pretty hesitant to let her attempt the crossbow. Long story short after about 30 minutes of doe eyes I gave in and we went out back. It wasn't going well, she struggles with eye dominance when using a scope plus the crossbow stock doesn't lend good placement for her head to the scope. Anyway I mentioned to her that she might need an eyepatch. She looks up at me and says, hey Dad why not just cover up one side of my shooting glasses with some tape..... so I did then I made a small cheek piece for the stock to help line her up with the scope..... and.... BAM, blew me away really, it was like night and day. This was her first couple shots completely unassisted other than a shooting stick at 25 yds I was pretty impressed and she was very excited.... She was all I wanna be a bowhunter, I don't want to shoot my deer with a gun... ahhhhh the brainwashing is working.....
My oldest daughter will be going with me for her second season this year, she is 6. My other two daughters are 3 and 2, I doubt I could handle them on a hunt but they have gone to check cameras with me and the occasional ride down a dirt road just trying to see a deer.
Well I'm pretty much commited to having my son hunt with me all opening weekend this coming Saturday and Sunday. Can't wait.
