Thought I had a buck making a scrape on other side of a 3' diameter oak. Ended up being a turkey, then about 15 more showed up and paraded around the stand I climbed down from about 3 hours ago. Ugh!
Had my first real antler encounter. After the turkeys went to roost the squirrels came back out. Heard one in the creek directly behind me. As I turned to see, eyes met with a decent 8 pointer. Nothing over the top, 120-125 but for a first Halloween buck I'd take it. He was about to climb the bank but stopped. I slowly moved back behind the tree and sat frozen. Didn't even hear him leave, seen him about 60yds down the creek walking. Think he's the one tending a scrape 100yds. or so away. I'm getting closer. Work tomorrow and back at it for 3 more days.
I tried, whether he circled back and was in the cedars where I couldn't see him I'm not sure. It's weird the way it happened. I literally craned my neck around and had my eyes completely turned could only see him out of my right eye, turning to my right. i think he seen the bill of my hat more than anything. In the 5 years i've been hunting that area I've always envisioned a buck walking the creek but it had yet to happen. The one time it does, I blow it. In hindisght it's probably a good thing, I was wanting something a bit better mainly a clean 10, but being Halloween and 2 buck tags I definitely would have shot him given the opportunity. I've got to rethink what I'm doing, i've been getting semi-caught lately. Never enough to spook them, but enough to redirect them.
