Why so, Dan? I'm curious. If you know it's sufficient, and it's always worked.....how does knowing the exact % aid you? FTR....I used to shoot in and win 3D tournaments with a compound bow.........shooting an FOC of <1%. My hunting arrows are over 500gr. and traveling a hair over 170mph.. I'm using a 150gr. BH and a 17gr. insert on 30" arrows. I've had pass-thrus on every deer I've shot with this setup, sans one (user error). What am I not taking advantage of? Bruce....I was severely over-spined on my last compound setup. Yeah....adding a bunch of weight up there would have helped. Switching to trad forced me to get a clue about a lot of tuning aspects. FOC? It's flying true. It has sufficient weight. I figure I'm "good".
3d is a different game. No broadheads. I base everything I post on my experience, not a software, tv show, or magazine article. I'll never shoot a broadhead with less than 12% FOC. There is an optimum arrow for every game. Most never take the time to find it because they are satisfied with what they shoot, and that's Ok. I tinker and test, that's what I Love to do You do what you want. Dan
I just checked It now, 17%. I measure mine Including the BH on both measurements. I'm thinking your not Including the BH on the length of the arrow? If I do that I get 21%.
I never include nock or broadhead either. My understanding has always been you are finding the balance point of the shaft. It's probably nitpicking though Dan
Every thing I saw that explained FOC didn't include nock or tip length. The 2 Archery programs I use, On Target 2 and Archer's Advantage, don't use it. I guess the reason is, when they established the FOC "standard", they did as Dan says, used the balnce point of the shaft with out tip or nock length. They could have dome it using the tip and nock length and that would have been fine as it is just a reference number. There just has to be a standard for that reference and right now the accepted standard doesn't include the tip and nock length.
No problem Bruce, just wondering. I've saw where some recommended using the BH too being It's part of the arrow. I've also read other places where they do not use the BH.
Of course it would. The length and weight of the BH are attached to the arrow for the measurements in either method of measuring.
For all of you big FOC guys, have you looked into the Harvest Time arrows? They are a small diameter hunting shaft with a big (45 gr i think) insert that tapers down to the shaft. There is a guy no Archery Addix who just got them and is going to be putting them through some tests this week. They seem like some neat arrows. I think they are available down to a 200 shaft.
