    elk scoring question?

OK, on the P&Y form... there's a spot for tip-to-tip spread, a spot for greatest spread, and a spot for inside spread of main beams.

It appears the form asks you to add the inside spread of the main beams to the total... much like a whitetail's. Is this correct? I guess the other spread measurements are just there for giggles...

Greg, the INSIDE spread is the number that counts towards your total score. Can't wait to see what he ends up at!

Cool. That's what I was thinking... Nothing like adding 34 1/2 inches to your total score! :)

Absolutely, I'm really anxious on the score. I'm not the greatest on elk. He is somewhat deceiving, having those great fronts. I'm gonna guess 250ish?

Pretty darn good guess, bc... :) His heavy mass carries all the way through well too, and I'm sure that helps him as well. His H4 measurement is still a hefty 5 4/8 all the way back there...

    Total: 259 3/8"

I'll have the story up as soon as I load some pics into photobucket... I'll put it on the main page and throw a link up to it here.

Good job Greg! Thats close enough to the P&Y minimum that I would consider it a shoe-in:tu: Good job on being the first sucessful elk hunter of the contest too!

Guys, I will be updating the first post with scores as the monarchs fall!

Two more days and me and my 'ol man are hitting the woods. I haven't been out with my dad since highschool back in 2006. Getting to hunt with him again in our old stomping grounds is going to be a joy in itself, kill or no kill. To say i'm slightly obsessed with the idea of hunting right now is an understatement. The new bow needs a proper break in ( And perhaps a Predator dip job like Greg's Destroyer!)

Who's comping at the bit? I'm going over maps and google earth to get it all in the memory bank. I've hunted this spot for the last 20 years and I still find new stuff every year. I have 8 days until I leave

PS my wife told me if she hears the elk bugle 1 more time I'm on the couch until I leave.

Being made to sleep on the couch isn't all that bad, it's like camping for guys:tu: I once had a girlfriend who didn't like hunting quite as much as I did, thus why I once had her, lol. Anyways, one night she banished me out of the bedroom so I did the next logical thing; Unrolled all of my bivy gear out and slept in the backyard. When she got up in the morning I was cooking oatmeal on my alcohol stove. She didn't see the humor:hater:

To answer your other question: I'M CHOMPING AT THE BIT!!! Gear is all packed and after work tomorrow me and my dad are hitting the road. 2 hours to elk camp and we have two days of undisturbed hunting to be had until the next week. I haven't slept in three nights and all I can think about is Wapiti.

I find it helpful to imagine a bull, very big one at that, in several different shot angles at random yardages. I go through the whole process in my mind from drawing, picking spot, aiming, shooting, and follow through. I believe this mentally prepares me for whatever may happen. Seems to help:confused:

So this is my last check in before my first hunt. I will have no service so I will be updating friday night or possibly saturday morning. Good luck to anyone else who will be leaving or heading out!

Good luck Backcountry. Looking forward to hear about your trip. Soon that big bull you have been imagining will be located behind the pin on your bow!

Well, we got back last night after two very LONG days of hunting. Got in close to one mature bull, but couldn't seal the deal. Had a few bulls going but they just are not into it yet. This week was mostly a feeler hunt. It only gets better from here! The next two weeks should be gold.

On our way out the first night we walked right up on a mid 150's whitetail at 48 yards, no shot. He was a pig!

I'm more of a "perfect story" hunter. I like to wait until the last minute..........not by choice:cry:

To put it simply, if things go according to plan, and they have the past four years, I should have a solid chance at a bull 270"+..with a decent chance at 290"+. However, i'm not being too picky. If a cow gives me a shot I can't turn down she's gonna get it. I haven't killed enough elk with my bow to be picky yet, lol.

Well with the fact I have a busy work schedule the next two days and that I am leaving for New Mexico Tuesday night right after work, today is the day I get to load up the truck.....

It's official, its going to be elk season for me very soon.

Getting one will be the bonus, having the ability to go is a blessing.

I feel that something good will come this year from our trip...I just have that feeling. With my mothers illness last hunting season it was hard to focus and not try to wonder what the outcome was going to be..... She encouraged me to go despite what was happening to her at that time.

This year, she will be with me, as she was when I was kid fishing...so its an all together a different trip......she, as with my wife, have always encouraged me to pursue my passion of elk hunting....for that I am truely blessed.

The elk will be the bonus..

excuse my ignorance:confused: I was still living in the days of team 4, lol. I retract my previous statement and replace it with this; " I HOPE YOU KILL SPIDEBULL'S DADDY!" lol
