I'll be on road month from today as well. And that is some fine shooting/grouping at 50 Rob! This thread will be great once the kill pics start rolling in
I'm jealous of you seeing this, I haven't been into elk country for a while now! I checked my spot a few weeks ago, all tore up. That is all I needed to know. Most of my time in the woods the last few weeks have been checking my trail cameras down low for whitetails.
Thanks, 4 weeks from now I will be in New Mexico. Talked to the outfitter and I am pumped !!! Now I just need at one to give me the opportunity. Not sure what to do, its all for fun so maybe redo the team with who all has responded ?? All the players are here, and really we all winners getting to experience the west during September so to me it really doesn't matter. I just can't wait to read the awesome stories and check out everyone's pic's !
I haven't checked this thread in a while, but absolutely. My hunt in the Gila starts on the 19th. I probably won't head over until the 16th or 17th, so I will definitely be around on the 14th, so give me a call and we will set something up for lunch or dinner, depeding on what time you are coming through. I remember last year you went through Albuquerque and maybe you are again this year, but if you want the most direct route look on map and find highway 60 just south of Amarillo and it will take you direct to Socorro, NM. Either route though and we will find a convenient place to meet.
Ok , Team 4 , I'm not entirely sure if BoneCollector is still in or not . Colin was supposed to be travelling with us , but we have heard nothing from him , no calls , no replies to text ..... nothing . I even asked if he was still coming and got no reply , so there may be a space available in Team 4 if this is the case ??????
Sorry to hear this! I hope all is ok over there. Like elkhuntinnut said, its just for fun. I'm not too concerned about who's team I end up on, just want to keep everything fair. It's looking like we may have some un-even teams. If so, then so be it. I think I will just take any and all remaining team 4 members, draw names, and they will join teams 1-3. I'm just getting antsy to get into the woods! I may sneak away for a quick backpack overnighter tomorrow night. I want to check out an area I packed into earlier this spring. After 8 straight days of work and a 15 hour day today I need some time in the woods!
I head to Oregon on Sept.11.....I am getting great reports back that our usual unit is loaded, so I'm super stoked...can't wait, went thru a rundown of gear at least a dozen times, starting to lose sleep. I know the cure, and it starts in 22days! Just the thought of the smell of the pines and the bugle ringing out in the early morning air gives me chills........
Man, you just gave me the chills.... This is my first time elk hunt and talk about losing sleep - the anticipation and uncertainty of what's ahead is killing me. I will be meeting up with my brother that I only see probably once or twice a year. Me, him and a guide. I'm looking forward to spending the time with him. We will be in CO, GMU 67. Only 8 bulls were taken from this GMU during the archery season last year. I feel very confident since the landowner has great access to the land there, both public and private. Heading out on Sept 17 from KCMO.
Going to be coming thru on the 15th...probably like mid morning to early afternoon. We normally go to Albuquerque as we will spend the night at my Aunt's. PM me your phone number and I will be sure to call you...
Any last-second tips anyone wants to throw out as far as supplies or what to bring? I stopped at Sam's Club yesterday and picked up another box of protein bars so I could throw a few each day into my pack... I've also been collecting lint from our dryer all summer and will have a fist-sized ball of it in a Ziploc bag along with a couple boxes of waterproof matches (read about the lint trick years ago in Field & Stream or somewhere... light, VERY compressible as to not take up space, but an EXCELLENT tinder for a fire starter if needed), super glue (for bad cuts), and a variety of bandaids. Be sure to take your baby powder and wet wipes... I go to our local Target and they've got VERY tightly rolled toilet paper you can buy in travel-sized packs I put in my backpack... Take a compass along with your GPS... just in case you can't get a satellite reading or your batteries die. Take extra batteries. String wax... D-loop material, pliers, lighter, extra nocks, extra broadheads, replacement blades... Wind checker... flashlights Extra boots. Elk calls. Rangefinder. Chapstick. Knife, sharpener. Binoculars... I've probably got more in my pack already, but that's all I can think of right now. What about you guys?
