Guys, don't forget to pack a scalpel holder and a bunch of blades in your packs so that you can cape out your bull while back at camp waiting on the other guys to finish their hunts. :)

I just picked up another set from Van Dyke's Taxidermy Supply for $14 (one holder and 20 blades)... you can find it easily by Googling it.

Well since you picked some up, can I just use it while you are trying to fill your tag?! :busted:

JK, in all seriousness I wish everyone good luck!

not real sure why...but I have no plans to get a bull mounted...probably because I have no vaulted/high ceilings to mount one properly.

Although I would like to try a European mount on one (and guess I'd still need knife to cape)...anybody have good instructions for Euro?

Man...I really want to put an arrow in one!!!

Personally, I would get a beatle guy to do the euro for you. Deer suck to do, but an elk is a whole 'nother story. Most guys around here charge about $100-125. That being said, I may try maceration on a deer to see how that works, then apply to elk.

I agree with the beatles... I've had numerous euro mounts done (all on deer) and the ones that are boiled don't look nearly as good - in my opinion...

One other consideration is to trade your cape for work... I traded a nice cape (off of a 300" bull) and the taxi gave me around $75-$100 credit towards getting a horn mount - which was the majority of the cost... They put the horns on an oak plaque with leather around the piece of skull - looks nice... If the bull would have been much bigger he said he wouldn't have charged me at all...

NICE!! You guys will be in prime elk country. But I am guessing that you already knew that.

I hunted near Meeker my very first year of hunting elk, man if I knew then what I know now we would have had a succesful hunt.

My buddy and I are going with 3 others that have done this hunt 4 times. They have pretty good luck. I've been doing a lot of 50-60 yard shooting. My confidence is high.
