After a very busy and excitement filled hunting season, alas, it is over today for myself. With the bitter cold, I finally braved the elements after my truck started at 11am LOL. Back to the begining of the season, myself and my fiance did not step foot in the woods after pulling trail cams in sept....my line of work does not allow me time off when its needed most. I did however secure some new hunting property that is fairly close to my home ( 20 min drive ) Nov 1st, Leanne and I headed out into the woods. Never thought I would even drop the hammer on anything. Camera in tow, Leanne did her best to film what unfolded befoer our eyes. Unfortunately the buck traveled across 300 yards of dried beaver flood before she could even get my attention. I stood there looking at her making faces at me, asking...did you see that doe...I simply asked DOE?!?!?!? where did she come out of?? As she pointed to the bottom end of the pond ( a huge cedar swamp is beyond there) I simply asked her..how long did she take to cross..answer was .......45seconds...OK....hit the grunt tube, and SHAZAAAM, a beautiful buck busting out of the brush below us on the ridge!! He ran right to the bottom of the ridge, and started downwind of us...I hit the grunt tube again, let loose the buck bomb ( not a corporate plug either :P ) LOL and 1 minute later we heard a grunt and then a snort wheeze BEHIND us ( UPwind ) I turn and this buck is literally 20yards away. Off goes the safety ( ya I know this is a bowhunting forum ) LOL , I squeeze the trigger and boom...buck damn near falls over backwards!!! HUGE commotion below us on the ridge. I think to my self, he's down. I tell my hunnny, he's down^5's between Leanne and me, walk back the 200 yards to the truck, grab the light packs. Head to point of impact, WTF, coarse hair and ZERO blood, HUH, I am thinking....going thru my shot, in my mind....I might have been a little forward on him...but hey...he should be down.....fast forward to 3 hours later ( dont flame me ) I happened to hit him in front of his shoulders, in that little peice of muscle that is above the esophogas ( sp? i know) and the spinal cord. I had one shot at him earlier in the blood trail ( it was long.....3.8km long ) after puttin him on the ground for good, trust me at this point I was upset with myself for not puttin a kill shot on him, not to mention for draggin my fiance along for the ride, however, when in doubt, I KNOW that my woman can find a speck of blood in melting snow and rain WOOOHOOO ( bonus for me ) After dragging him 200 yards out of the cedar swamp, I then realize that my gps, compass, water, lunch is all back in my truck, an unknown distance away. Leanne noticed flagging tape markings along the ridge of the swamp we were in, up we go to check them out, wellllllllllllllllll low and behold a gravel road is only 125yards away from us. LOL. Walk back to the truck, reset the mileage, and measure the distance. If anyone ever asked me how far a whitetail will go once shot, I never would have sed 3.8km's. Fast forward to Nov 29th. Leanne and I out twice more in the stand, lots of deer, no shots. I dropeed her off at noon and headed to my newly aquired property. I am 8 feet up in my tree when the deer are rushing towards me, up comes the bow. Yearling passes thru lane, momma then passes, I trip my release, watch the hole appear in her hide and watch my luminock disappear in that hole. 43 yard trail, and here she is. After that we hit the deep freeze here. COLD temps and the deer here starting to yard up and move with 5mins left in shooting light, made for some rough evenings. Was out today with the boomstick and played cat and mouse with a buck that had a doe bed up on my fathers property. Froze my nards off. Sed to heck with it at 3 today, it was my dads tag we were hunting for, and at his age this weather kicks the sheeet outta him. I however did take pics of some of the bucks that are living INSIDE the no hunting allowed area of here.... Here is a pic of my bud's 2nd deer ever!! Had to push the wolves off the deer to gut him ( about 4hours from shot to finding ( he couldnt find it and came to my work to get me ) However, for the rest of you all that are out there still grinding it and freezing, God bless, good luck and shoot straight!!!! Thank you again for accepting me into the fold here, a HELL of a lot nicer than most of the other forums out there. Cheers Reese
Good stuff Reese! Congrats on a great season and way to brave the bitter cold. Hey, we ever going to that smallmouth trip we've been talking about the last 4 years? :D I look forward to hunting with you some day as well brother!
Dan thanks brother!!! and for sure this summer.....lets pick a sunday man, tho I KNOW you will be busy with the kids :P and camp lol...lets hope they dont log TO the lake eh man....that blow down is sweet....no one has been in there....bad thing...is the northerns are growing up, still fun as hell but makes for losing a 9 dollar rapala a bit of a beetch Cheers Reese
Cool thread Reese and some great pictures to boot!! Congratulation's on your buck and doe, great story!!!
Yeah, I'm always busy....but mom and dad have their own cabin at camp and come quite a bit and watch the kids when I "need" to get away. Its a....errr.....a....date. TO? I guess I don't even know the name of the lake! HA! I know about where it is, especially when you say blow down. I doubt they will log it, at least not this year. They are supposed to be finishing all their logging down my road and pulling out for good. Or until the next plan comes out....but I don't think there is much left after they finish this winter. $9 Rapalas??? Oh yeah, you live in The Socialist Republic of Canada where everything costs an arm, leg or first born child!
Yeah, but our health care is free LMAO..... you think rapala's are expensive....try a new BOW haha!! for the record....I still have my 1st and 2nd born children...however my rapala collection is depleted LOL!!! :p Thanks for the congrats fella's! Cheers Reese
