Going out in the woods tomorrow to set up my bear bait barrel. 2 more week till the season opens. Hauling a 55gal drum and treestands out. Then once baiting opens I'll haul out the 150 - 200 lbs of bait.
I'll take my camera and get some pics of the setup. Hopefully I wont have to hike too far to find a decent spot.

well, the barrel is out. Treestands are in place. Shooting Lanes are cut. Now the season just needs to open.

Didnt Bring a sled... which we should have so instead we used some conduit.

How can you tell what a good spot is in thick timber like that? Do bear follow certain trails like deer or do you just go off of what you "feel" is a good spot??

Bears like thick Cover. Therefore, the bigger trees is a better place to find them. They also like Devils Clubs and Fiddle head ferns. This place is thick with devilsclub and ferns so I figured It would be a good spot. The bears eat the berrys when the devilsclub is green. There were better spots but this one had three trees that we could put stands in. Once June rolls around the boars will start looking for females to breed so Its hard to keep them around the bait. Once you have bait out though they should come. Bears sense of smell is something like 2100x that of a humans and 7x greater than a bloodhounds. I found alot of Brownbear hair on the devilsclub though so hopefully I wont have any issues with them.
