Well I got my 2nd ever deer with my compound last night.

15 minutes of light left on the last day of the VA bow season. I hear them coming up hill from the south east(behind to my right). I was already standing like I usually do for the last minutes of light. I look and there are 1, 2, 3, 4 5 of them. Looks like they are heading behind me, do I turn to the left for the shot. Hold it they turned my way.

I watch the first one come right beside me and then under my stand. This is the first time I have had one that close especially under my stand. Then the second one came under my stand. #1 deer was out five yards and stopped the second was under my feet. The other three were there somewhere. I came to draw on the first doe and the third one in line alerted. The one in my sights started to pick her head up. I pulled the trigger.

She took off up the hill to the west towards my dad's stand. 35 yards later she spun around came back five yards and crashed. At this same time dad was coming down his ladder and heard the crash, he thought he jumped a deer. It's only 60 yards and a thicket between us.

I love lighted nocks! I watched that nock go and I knew where she was.

Ok I will admit I shot down at a deer that was facing away more than quartering and only got one lung.

Dad and I get back to her with the game cart and at some point between the shot and death she became a he. A button buck.

    edit to add:
When I got to my parents house, dinner was on the table, and my boys see me in my tree suit the usual conversations starts.
Aaron (the little one): Hi daddy!!! you went huntin'?
me: yeah buddy i was hunting
Aaron: did you see any deer?
me: yup (I dont spoil his fun of asking the next question)
Aaron: DID YOU SHOOT THE DEER? (combination of excitement that i saw deer and frustration b/c i am making him ask)
    before i can answer,
James (my oldest, 5 yrs old): Well, YE'AH, cant you see the blood.
Me: yes buddy I shot a deer.
    Aaron: with your bow?
    me: yup!
Aaron: OK, you should go wash your hands. your food is getting cold.
Aaron: can we go to the woods to see it?
    Me: nope.
    James and Aaron: why not?
me: 'cause he is on the back of the truck in the drive way...

    end edit.
Well that's my story on my second deer with my bow. I know I shot a button buck and I shot down at a deer facing away, generally a no no for bow hunting so please don't beat me up to much for that.

Be safe y'all and wear your safety harness.

My four year old holding up his head (pic 2) side note: he was quite happy to pick it up and was smiling, i just didn't take the picture until he was about to drop it b/c "it's toooooooo heavy" thud (he droped it).

No I didn't make the boys pose with the head, they wanted to pick it up, they love it when daddy gets a deer.

Way to go! Congrats! Don't sweat the button. My uncle shot a doe that turned into a buck last year. It happens.

Well he hung Friday night. Ground him up Saturday and put him in the cooler to let more blood drain out over night. And now he is wrapped up and in the freezer.
