So I have hunted for turkey before, but never really put in the time typically 1-3 hunts a year. This year I stuck to it mainly because I had time and my wife was ridiculing my hunting skills. This was around my 6th hunt of the year and my second morning hunt.

I checked out to a new area on base I had never hunted before that had 4-5 plots in it at first I was weary of going there cause when I checked in I was the 12th person out of 12 to be in that area. I got in there super early and waited for light even got to hear some coyotes sound off it was pretty cool!

About an hour after day light I hear gobbling best guess is 300 or so yards out. So I yelp a little, again gobbling, I would sit and listen about every 2 min or so I would yelp to see where they were. Fast forward about 5 mins it sounds like a whole flock is coming in from my left 3 Toms pop out and head right for my decoys. The rest is history shot the biggest of the 3 at about 10 yds ..... I am HOOKED!

    20 LBs , 11" beard, 1" spurs

Wardens told me it's the 44th bird checked in

Disclaimer I used a shotgun lol

Set up: turkeys came from left and were shot between me and decoys

Congrats!! My first turkey made me realize that a goofy looking bird can make my heart pound just as hard as a big mature buck can. Nothing like it. Nice job!

Thanks dude! We get two tags here in NC. Gonna try and fill the second this weekend. Lejeune is packed full of birds though they do get a decent amount of pressure.

Hoping to be back in MD first week of May gonna see if I can get up there as well. Don't really have many turkey properties up there, but do get some on the trail cam occasionally on one of my props ... we shall see !

I have yet to get a bird in MD. Have been trying like you for the last 3 years, but haven't been to serious about it. Just a low population here also were I hunt. I have went out to Green Ridge the last few years, alot more birds out there. But those mountain birds are really tough! Been close many times, but just hasn't happen yet.

The population seems to be growing but still hit or miss. I think patchy is a good word lol. May try Fredrick city watershed or Cunningham falls. I know there is some at pretty boy and liberty I use to hear them gobble all morning while I was fishing in the spring, but killing one with a shotgun is hard enough.

Congrats! Nothing makes the heart hammer like a tom gobbling his way into your decoy spread. That's an awesome first bird!
