Guys and Gals I will be heading to my 10th deercamp next week. I am a self made deer hunter, and have never really been to a real deercamp as it's just my buddy and I. Well his son, kind of my nephew, is coming this yr since he just finished his safety course. I will ask my buddy if he needs anything like a knife, safety equipment like a whistle or compass. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated from anyone with gift ideas. Longdraw Ps. Good safe hunts to you all!
definetly a good knife im 16 and when i was 12 i got a great gerber deer cleaning knife from my grandparents, loved it and loved huntin since i was 3
I say Knife also BUT there has to be a prank involved too I hope! Something has to make this camp a special one with memories of a gift plus a joke!
Knife is good. Give him an apron too, so he knows his place at camp I got a Winchester Model '94 my first year at camp, however there were 4 guys to split the cost. I still love that gun.
If you guys are real close, a hand-me-down of sorts would be cool, it could be one of your pieces of equipment! And it would also give you an excuse to buy a brand new piece for yourself
Thanks y'all. I think he has a knife, but he may need a hunting only knife. He will be the recipient of several goofs, and he will be hauling a lot of gear next weekend for sure. I sure hope 1of us kills a deer. The public land hunting has only provided 1 doe in 10 yrs for the 2 of us.
You could get him a guthook knife and have it engraved with his initials or something. My brother did this for me for a birthday a few years back. It was pretty cool and it's gutted several deer to date. Good luck this season!
You know, it doesn't have to be a "bought" thing. I have an old walking stick, that was wittled down and engraved by my older cousin. It was given to me when I first started hunting, 18 years ago, and I still have it to this day. I don't "use" it, but I might when I get older. A budget would be helpful, too.
If I was to do it again, I would start him out with a journal so that he could write down all his thoughts and feelings about the things he encounters while at camp or hunting in general. This is a tradition we started at camp a few years ago and it's one of my favorite. Everyone writes the night before opening day what their expectations are then their results the following days. It would be a nice tradition for him to continue into adulthood. A nice leather bound one at barnes and noble for $20.
+1 on the new hunting area those odds are horrible. A skinning knife is always nice, engraved arrow shafts, the photo album, or a camp cook book
I am glad I got him a knife. He was thrilled and his Dad was very appreciative. As for a new spot, we did OK. We found a 160 acre spot that only had 1 other guy there the first day and only us the 2nd. I had a small buck walk to 25 yds just before sunup the first morning. I thought he was behind cover so I turned to get him into my scope in the next shooting lane. But all I saw was him running away. I then noticed in the daylight that he was in a dark covered spot, but could still see me. The next AM I had a doe at 100 yds but never got a clear shot. My buddy on the other hand: took a TON of crap into the woods, made a ton of racket, used every noise maker he could (rattling horns, dow bleet can, grunt, and a COYOTE call) so that killed any chance of seeing anything else both days. I may never hunt anywhere else with him again!!!
I would feel awful If I gave my 12 year old nephew a knife and he cut himself or someone else for that matter. How about a head lamp or a flashlight?
If this is an honest concern the kid would have no place in camp... If he's gonna hunt, he can handle a knife.
