I got my first buck with my bow this year he is kinda weird I don't know why one side is 4 and the other is wide with 2 but still proud of him. Any thoughts on why his rack was the way it was ?
I'm not sure what causes it, but I had a old buck that was similar to that on my gamecam a few years back. I also saw a buck on "Bow Hunt or Die" that also had a horn similar to that (it's name was Machete I believe) and ended up being a huge buck and was shot on the show just this season. Here's the buck I got on gamecam a few years back.. Great job on the bow kill, that first deer with a bow is a awesome experience.
Nice job on the bow kill. The rack question, some times its in there genes, some times it might have been from a wound they had from awhile ago. Beefie
We shot one 2 years back that was a 4x1, the spike side was probably 8". He seemed like an otherwise normal young buck.
Congrats on your buck! Could possibly be from an injury or might just be how he is! Either way, great job on your first bow kill, you`ll remember it forever!
From what I've read in a few different publications, and experienced in person, it's most likely from an injury, but on the opposite side of his body. I had a buck 3 years ago I hit square in the shoulder. He lived, and the next year his rack was screwed up on the opposite side. I'm thinking a injury can definitely be the cause if you look at photos I posted of that older buck. You can clearly see he had a old wound on the opposite side of the body that he had the long spike antler. That buck was in bad shape and unfortunately he never really came around to my cams until after late season flintlock and I never did see him during archery or rifle season either. I'm not even sure that buck made it into the following season, he disappeared after about a week of coming into where I was feeding them at the time. He was very slow getting around and alarmingly skinny after going through a rough winter. I do believe it was a older buck though, but I agree with those that say it can be due to genetics or due to a old wound.
