I really do appreciate everyone's honesty here. An honest question deserves honest answers, even if some of us don't agree.:D
From the angle depicted in the picture, no. I am in far worse condiiton when someone/anyone looses a deer around me, including myself. I would be tore up if I did not get a shot, but it happened last year to a much bigger deer all because my harness hung me up. I thought I would never get over that, but I have...a deer I lost awhile back still bothers me badly. In short I do not feel I could kill that deer in the pic 100% of the time, therfore no shot.
I agree 99%, the plugged hole deal i do not. I have yet to see an arrow plug up an entry hole, qrt away shots at a large angle then would be passed also, because a pass through may not happen in that situation either. The buck I shot last year was Qrt away at a hard angle, the blood trail was pretty easy even with the arrow plugging the hole. I knew the deer was down when he whacked the arrow against a tree, it's a fairly distinct sound:p I have no idea how anyone killed a deer with a stick, string and some flint; if they complicated it as much as we do these days.
if i know that deer isnt going to give me a better shot, im smoking him, i have enough confidence in my accuracy that i could put it right where i wanted to avoiding the shoulder blade/knuckle
My answer is two part because by myself in a tree I would most likely shoot I know I can make that shot. Part 2 I only hunt with a cameraman in the tree with me and with camera rolling to many hunters would rape you with the unethical shot thing.. Walt
Hey I hear you. I had to make flash cards of deer pictures standing at different angles and write below them "BROADSIDE", "QUARTERING AWAY" "TEXAS HEART SHOT", etc. etc. I review them first thing every morning and last thing everynight. I am not quite where I want to be, but I am making progress daily.
I don't have the energy to shoot this deer in this situation(through shoulder).I have no doubt I could slide my arrow into the boiler room without catching bone.PROBLEM is I would have to come out through the intestines which have a funny way of clogging the hole and getting no blood.Mature deer with no blood usually will be a lost animal.Highlikelyhood of a single lung hit as well. Not necessarily saying I wouldn't shoot but I would wait for an opportunity that I would feel confident I would be able to collect my kill.
Brett I just finished the two new RTMB dvd's and noticed the same thing. In their defense many of them made very deadly shots on those deer. In the last picture posted, from 15-20 feet up a hunter should be able to come in high and get into the cavity very well. Question is how good of a trailer are you because a hit going in that high might not be passing through to leave a low exit wound and high entry wounds are not really known to be the best for blood. You'd be relying on following the blood the deer starts coughing up which could take several seconds(how much ground can a deer cover in 10 seconds?), or blood from the high wound brushing against something and in thick cover 50 -150 yds of little to no blood can be a real nightmare.JMO
Same here. I would make my mind up when the opportunity presented it self, but I highly doubt I'll ever get such an opportunity!
Would someone mind showing on a picture of a hard quartering toward deer where you should aim? From an elevated position please... I honestly have no idea where the shot should go?
Somebody please show me where you would shoot this deer with a bow ... if you said you would ... in the original scenario ...
Jeff and Tony---here is what I have been seeing on hunting videos/shows. Guys are actually shooting right throw the shoulder blade and into the kill zone. They are driving a high speed arrow right through that front shoulder without concern. I won't do it.
