In illinois and its ten and lower wondering if the deer will be active or wait till it goes back up in temp ?
The colder it gets the better they move. I have hunt in temps as low as 15 - 20 below here for day time highs. The deer were on their feet all day feeding. Dress warm and get out there and hunt !!! Tim
C'mon...Go... it gets that cold here in Alabama sometimes. Not this year... but sometimes and they move great.
This time of year the cold seems to really move deer to food. I've hunted in below zero temps and I know I've seen deer on the hoof.
I've been out there when it's been 5' degrees and those critters have just stayed put. When it's this cold dress warm. Let people know where you're going and carry the emergency blanket just in case.....maybe someone should run a thread on what's in you back pack in case of emergency's.
As a general rule, when it's cold, the deer must feed more often to stay warm. In my experience, in our part of the country, the deer move more during cold weather. They will hunker down and stay put during really nasty weather, warm or cold. I have also noticed more movement either right before, or right after a storm front passes thru. In any event, I have seen nothing lock them down tighter than high winds. When the temps are in the teens, or single digits, I have observed deer moving all day long......and they are never far away from a good food source. Once it gets nasty cold, at or below zero degrees, the movement slows down considerably, and they feed during the warmest part of the day. That's how they roll in Illinois anyway! :-)
You Bet, Get out there! Been waiting here for a cold snap which never did show up until New Years eve. To bad the season ended Jan 1!
