Right now i shoot a 100 grain tip putting with a 9.5 gpi arrow. My total arrow weight is right around 425 gr. I am all for shooting a heavier arrow/broahead but i was just wondering why are the 100 grain tips the most popular? It seems like almost everywhere you look the largest selection is in 100gr. I love the montec broadheads from G5 but kinda curious as to why the dont sell their montec cs in 125 gr? Also would shooting a heavier tip have a positive or negative affect on the FOC? like is have the FOC too far forward Bad? My bow- 66lbs, 28" draw, Any inputs/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Matt
1. Having an FOC from 12-15% is a good thing but try and at least get over 10%. Using 125 grain heads will increase your FOC and no it won't be too much. 2. The reason why you see more 100 grain heads is several reasons. First it's bowhunters obsession with speed. Second, it is the "Standard" weight head. I’m guessing more manufactures choose not to make all their heads in 125 grain is because feel they won't sell enough of them to justify it. I think you will find that many of the 125 grain head users are also pretty knowledgeable and experienced. Coincidence? Probably not. If you have a head that you like that is made in 125 grain go for it. It's a move you won't regret. Just make sure to check your tune again after switching.
I agree HERE, 100%!!! Ignorance is bliss, even on GT's website they recommend a 8-12% FOC, which isn't actually optimal for arrow flight. For the OP, that change would up your FOC about 2%, enough that you may see a difference, especially with broadheads. As for Montec's, unfortunately, that is a company that makes what sells, rather than what may be "better." Looking for a GREAT BH, that is affordable, and does an AWESOME job, look no further than Slick Tricks!!! You can get a pack of ST's and an extra set of blades for the same price you can get the Montecs, and you can choose 100 or 125 gr, you can get 1" cutting diameter with 4 blades, or 1 1/8" with 4 blades, and have more "cut" available to do damage as well. I "tricked' 6 animals before busting a blade on rocks in a creek bed, but once I installed a new set of blades, I was ready to hunt again.... The ST fly so nicely, I have as much confidence with a ST on the end of my arrow as I do with a FP!!!
I kinda thought the 100 gr was more popular because of guys wanting more speed, But i do think it would be better to shoot a 125 gr head so i'll prolly do that and next year i'll be looking into a little heavier arrow too. I wouldnt of known the FOC advice so that was helpful. Thanks for the input
You probably have plenty of weight, 450gr with a 125gr head, and you're at a good FOC level. I don't know that I'd go too much above that range if you want to capture the best of both worlds as far as WHACK and SPEED being together. I set up my current "handi-cap" bow at 52.5# and am shooting either a 395 or 420gr arrow out of it, but I may be going a little excessive on the weight d/t the low poundage. I'm also shooting 28.5" DL out of that set-up.
thanks guys, I'll look into getting a 125 gr (that means next time i'm home from college i will get them lol)
125g SLICK TRICKS!!!! i've got the 1-1/8" Magnums and the Razortricks. these things are nasty, and i never have to worry about them doing their job. and yes, they will slaughter a deer through the shoulder (Magnums)
The reason I use a 100grain head is because thats what my bow setup is telling me to use. Broadhead tuning tells me arrows are a bit weak so I turned down the poundage and now my broadheads are hitting right with my fieldpoints. If I switched to a 125 grain head it would throw the tuning way off.
I tried using 125 grain heads but as stated above, I simply couldn't get my bow to tune. By the time I did my fletching would contact my cables. I'm going to make a few modifications in the off season to my arrow but for now 100 grains is what is working. Head to walmart very soon, I know their archery stuff in my area is on sale now, and pick up a pack of 125 grain field points, you can get them for like $3.
Thanks guys.. I have purchased 125 gr field points but havent found the time to shoot yet but i plan to this weekend.
