I know from personal experience most bag targets are only good for a few thousand shots. I have blown through 4 in one year before. I logged right at 15,000 shots that year. At an average cost of $60 a target, that's getting pretty pricey. Especially considering the amount of commercial shrink wrap that I had used on them before replacing. We have one of our Cube targets that after testing we feel very confident 15,000 shots without a pass through is possible. We really feel it could go near 20,000 but, not 100% sure yet. This target should hold a retail price of $190.00 (not a set price yet). What do you guys think? How many shots do you average on a target?
I don't count shots to be honest. So no idea. I know it took me 4 years to blow through all 18 sides on a 18-1 target. Bag targets are limited IMO. You can't shoot BH's into it. They are bulky and hard to travel with. Smaller, highly durable foam targets are better overall IMO. Do i own a bag target? Yes I have one. But I find myself using other targets more often. $190 on a bag target seems outrageous IMO no matter how many shots it will take. That is the cost of two 18-1. You are going to have a hard time getting people to pay that kind of money for a target.
I prefer using bag targets with field points for most of my shooting but do have 3d targets I shoot for fun and a couple portable broadhead targets. I don't like the 18-1 because it's too small. I use morrel outdoor range targets already and get years out of them before I need to change the bag. After a couple bags it's time to replace the whole target. Not sure if what your offering is better than the outdoor range target but it better be because it's more expensive. One of the keys to bag targets is to have a roof over them so the material inside doesn't get wet. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk
I have wondered for a while if it is possible to have a net that just catches your arrow then it drops to the ground? Or something that deflects an arrow down and never runs out of life? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I built a target that's just a box full of old clothes folded and packed as tight as I can. It was free, and I leave it in my room for blind bailing. Has well over 30,000 shots. I shoot about 50 arrows a night at it and have had it for 3 years without a pass through. So it's a much cheaper option for a lot of shooting but it's around 50 pounds. I have the Rhinehart 18:1. I have had it for over 2 years. Several thousand shots on it and it is still going strong. I shoot the Rage practice heads only into it. It will probably 7 years or more before my arrows start passing through.
Whoa! Somebody's math was way off today! Here is what I actually have. Test subject was a 5" spot. 500 shots into the one spot. 20x20 surface=16-5" areas on each side. 6 sided target for a total of 96-5" areas. 96x500=48,000 shots. That's much better. The whole time I was thinking something doesn't seem right. I'll repost another post later once we blow this 5" spot out. It's still stopping arrows very well at 500 shots.
I own a morell yellow jacket bag target and its fine. And by replacing the cover I get more life out of it. I think I paid $45 for it. The covers are fairly cheap. I'm asking a serious question. Why should I pay $200 for a bag target?
first bag i got almost five years ago a crossbow bag that I used a compound on. It is starting to look pretty ruff but stops the arrows yet only passed an arrow through twice. need another one.
IMO $199.99 is a lot of money for a bag target. Even if it gets 15,000 shots. I don't see myself spending that kind of money or anyone I know Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
If the target holds up and last, there is definitely a market. There was a time when I would shoot from 500 to 1000 arrows a week into my bag. It takes a serious target to hold up to that. I never had too much issue with the morrel outdoor range. There are some targets that are supppsed to be better and more expensive. There is definitely a sector of archers that needs high quality targets. It just isn't for the casual hunter. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk
The Rhinehart rhino brute cube target retails for 199 as well. If the target holds up to broadheads, it will sell but imo, a bag target can't be beat for field points. Easier pull and less wear and tear on arrows. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk
I only shoot bulldog targets there the best and lifetime guaranteed and at a great price it's what most proshops use for target walls. Check them out there awesome bulldogtargets.com the doghouse xp is the best check it out I also use the pug.
Third hand archery rag bag, going on about 4 years now and it has a ton of life left in it. I bought the two pack of the bag covers and the second one is been sitting in the shop collecting dust.... I can't shoot the first one out.
I have the morell yellow jacket bag target and i have put well over 10,000 shots into it. I also have a delta McKenzie archers choice 3d deer tatget that i have had for 5 months and i can already see daylight on the other side. I highly recommend the morell yellow jacket. I also shot my crossbow at it. Great target Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I just got a Morrell Elite hanging bag target. Guaranteed no pass-thrus for FOR 2 YEARS. For $80 it's worth a try. I had one in the past and it lasted a long time. 4 years ago I gave it to a buddy who doesn't shoot much. He wrapped a piece of carpet around it and put a new cover on it. He still uses it. I have gone through 3 targets (other brands) since then. Back to Morrell.
While it's a good warranty, there are some things that need to be understood. As long as ALL spots are completely shot through, you've saved your proof of purchase, you're willing to foot the bill to ship it back to them and then THEY make the final determination as to whether it's completely shot through or not AND they make the final determination as to whether you've rotated it, every 75-100 shots as recommended, which factors into their decision to warranty it or not. If they chose NOT to warranty it, they ship it back to you COD (you pay to receive it).
I have one of the new style blocks and a homemade layered carpet target. I don't ever get my block out of the garage anymore. The homemade carpet target stops arrow just as good, they are easier to pull out and it shows very little wear. The best part is it cost me about 8 bucks to build.
We have now been testing the same targets with a 380fps Crossbow. Still holding up well. To clarify a few things that I believe were misunderstood. Bag Target: It is not a bag target it's a CUBE.. There will be two types available. Both will be in the form of a 19" cube with 6 shootable sides. -One will have a Polypropylene cover much like many of the material used on 2 sided target bags. This target will retail for around $100-$120. -One will have a poly/rubberized self healing coating. We are still refining the coating and a few other items to nail down price but, we are estimating the $180 mark. We are trying vigorously to reduce that as well. Most people who build their own home range targets and only shoot at home may not understand paying for or value a target of this quality and that is completely OK. I have personally built my share of targets and actually have a thread on this forum in which I instructed how to build one. These targets are another (we feel it's a better) option for many that prefer to buy rather than build. Unlike most targets for home use, if you leave this one outside it soaks up very little water in the rain. What it does soak up, if you lay the cube on its side, most the water will drain out of it. This is one way it shines over any bag style and other cube style targets. Lets not forget it is one of the very few that has 6 shooting sides. Not a cube with only 4 sides. That's approximately 30% more shooting surface. As for a broadhead target, we have started testing the core of our target to see how well it can hold up to broadheads. We will develop a broadhead target or a double duty target as soon as we get these two finalized.
