My wife and I decided to dump our cable company today. The time away from the TV will be nice but we are still looking to watch some of our shows. We currently subscribe to Netflix but I have been looking at Hulu Plus as well, I like the idea of having new shows right now instead of waiting. What else should I be looking at? I know we had a thread on this a while ago but I cannot find it now.
I just use hulu and netflix. What else do you need? I also stopped playing video games. So much time to enjoy the real life now.
my Xbox 360 got the red ring of death about 3-4 years ago...never bought a replacement. Best non-purchase I ever made. I would honestly get lost on their for hours. Had no idea how much life it was taking away from me at the time. Anyway, I love my ROKU but if I didn't already have ROKU I would definitely get one of those new Amazon thingies; especially since I already have Prime. In fact, as soon as this season of GoT is over, I will probably dump directv and get the new Amazon thing.
2 more weeks till my contract is up and I dump DirecTV... man I can't wait. We have the Roku with all the basics I guess, Hulu Plus, Netflix, PBS app, there is a bunch of crap on there actually. If I didn't already have the Roku I think I would buy the Apple box......
I haven't had paid tv in 2 years, I use Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, Crackle and a few other apps on my smart TV. I save about $75.00 a month.
We "cut the cord" 3 months ago. It's been great. I have a satellite for OTA channels and a Roku. With Roku I have Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime and Plex. Those are my paid subcriptions. All < $30/month combined. Now I also have HBOGO, WatchESPN, Disney/Disney Jr, History, FOX, etc apps with my parents login information. This helps a ton. They don't use any of the streaming services, so I don't feel bad at all for doing this We haven't missed anything by dropping cable (Yes I know we do cheat a bit...) Now we watch the show we want, then the TV goes off. No more just leaving the TV on for background noise. And if we do want background noise, we usually just put Pandora on.
I bought an antenna 9 months ago and I get what I want to watch (which is about nothing). Don't miss it all.
Amazon Prime is another one to think about. Plus the 2 day free shipping on stuff on Amazon is great too. We are in year 3 of no cable. The only thing I actually really miss is the Brewer games. But I don't miss shelling out $70 more a month.
I'm trying to figure out how much your bill needs to be to see it as cost effective. My directv bill is currently about $78 a month with a genie, DVR and a standard HD box. Most of my viewing is History, A&E, Discovery and such as far as pay channels. Football, UFC and NASCAR are the predominant sports I watch and generally a couple shows over the air. I already have a smart TV and amazon prime but most of the shows I watch cost per epsiode. I rarely watch shows same day as airing hence the genie and DVR, but don't want to wait months to see them for free. For those of you who are saving $70+ a month, how.much was your bill then and now. Seriously thinking about it this time, followed Hookers thread awhile back but never pulled the trigger on it. Every time it rains or my phone rings at the most inconvenient time makes me want to drop directv.
Charter cable. Don't know about Wii. But I would consider adding the Xbox system to the mix. They are the only non pay TV system that has an agreement with ESPN.
Being in SE Wisconsin, don't you get Brewers games over local airwave affiliate? If not, you can get mlbtv for about $135/season. Comes out to about 20 bucks a month; and it's worth it b/c you can watch or listen on any mobile device nationwide, including ROKU (and I'm guessing Amazon also has an ap for that.) Caveat - local blackout restrictions apply to watching the games; audio is unaffected. I've been an mlbtv subscriber for 6 seasons now. Been worth every penny.
This is the problem. I am in the blackout area. If I want to listen to the game I can listen to it on the radio no problem. No, the Brewer games are no on broadcast TV over the air. I've looked into this a lot and the only way to get the Brewer games live within the Blackout area is to pay for TV. I would be willing to pay the $135 for the season no problem. It is beyond Gayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
We use Charter too. I hate them but they have the best internet around here. Honestly, I'm not much of a sports guy, I couldn't care less for ESPN
Exactly. Their internet is the fastest by far. I have to call them once a year to give me the new subscriber rate but it is time well spent. Don't worry about the xbox then.
yeah. MLB blackout rules are the most frustrating/confusing of any major sport. I can't figure out why the hell FoxSports hasn't figured out that they'd make more money going on-demand/a la cart subscriber than they do bundling w/ cable/satellite. Or if there's not enough demand for that to be profitable, bundle Fox networks internally...FoxNews w/ Fox Sports, or FX, etc. Fox Networks in general is slow on coming around to that. FX in not available for subscriber on demand either (you have to pay for each show individually) but Fox and FoxNews are available on a monthly subscriber fee. Go figure.
