I work till 5pm every day and work about 30 min from where i hunt. Depending on wind, I want to get out tonight. Could easily be in stand by 5:45 sunset here is 7:28 tonight. Still a solid 2 hours on the stand
If the wind is in your favor then I don't see why not. You could have deer passing the stand within 10 minutes of getting into it, so a solid 2 hours sounds good to me. I would say go for it and good luck. -Andrew
Im the same exact way. I get out at 5 and am usually in stand around 530 545. I see a ton of deer in these 2 hour sits. Just my luck though that I usually see a nice buck when I can no longer see well enough to put a good shot
For me, it depends on the particular location. If I have a good, quick entry that doesn't bump deer and the wind is in my favor, you'd bet your butt I'm in that stand.
I agree with Fitz. When I was on day shift I did the very same thing many times. That was the perfect way to unwind after a long day at work
I personally switch to day shift every fall just for that reason. I can hunt every evening even if it is for only two hours. I can't get up every day if I am working evenings.
Well you certainly can't shoot a deer from your living room. Might as well get out if you have a couple hours.
yea and my thought is, the later in the year it gets, the less daylight. So need to capitalize now. Thanks folks! This is why I'm on this site. I'll keep you posted, have a quick stand in mind for tonight.
Most people have it nails. You want your entry AND exit routes to be the least invasive as possible. The stand that I hunt in those type of situations is on the edge of a runoff ditch. I can walk in from the creek bottom, up the drainage to the base of my tree. Same thing with getting out. Sometimes I have to sit in my stand for a good 30 minutes past dark so that I can get down without disturbing the deer out in my soybeans. Once I'm out of the stand, It's pretty much clear sailing since I'm walking down in the ditch that is higher than I am tall.
Yep, that is prime time as far as I am concerned as long as your entry routes are good as others have stated. Last year was settled into the stand around 5 and had a nice buck on the ground by 6:45. :p Obviously as it gets later in the season that isn't going to work out very well.
Another benefit is that you aren't there if the wind did shift during your otherwise what would be a 3-4 hr sit and alerting any deer that may have been headed your way but picked you off long before they were in range. Good luck!
Worked out. Was in stand by 6pm with sunset around 7:30. Two does came through a little past dark, one down wind actually, but didn't seem to mind. Passed on shooting second one as it was late and i wasn't 100% sure it was a doe. But better than sitting at home wishing i was in a tree!
What's too late to get in stand? The day after season closes or right at dark whichever fits. Anything else is not too late for something magical to happen.
