Vectra for your pup and sawyers (or another permethrin based clothing treatment) for you. If you follow the directions properly, one treatment is safe and lasts up to 40 days even if it rains. Not only repels but kills the lil monsters if they are dumb enough to crawl on you. Life saver. Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Like someone said on here earlier, you can save yourself a ton of money by ordering a quart of permethrin concentrate from Amazon.com. The price in the pic below is last year's price. Not sure how much it is now. I'd have to look up how much to use again since I don't remember, but I know I just put around 1 ounce in a 1 gallon sprayer and soaked everything I wear in the woods. I didn't get a single tick or chigger. I still have around 30 ounces of concentrate left.
DIY n save some money. Nice. Im not sure what the ratio is either. But I know its 1% or less in a 24oz container.
I bought more Sawyer's today! That stuff is worth it's weight in gold. I had 7 ticks on me a few years back. I went out to scout with a guy and didn't treat my clothes. I went to the doctor and they tested me and everything was ok. They gave meds to take for a week. He said it is the same medicine they use to treat malaria. Anyways. every since then, I have not went into the woods without it. I treat EVERYTHING! Like others said, treat the inside of your truck/car too. I have a base layer I wear whenever I go in the woods in the warm months and I treat it too. I also use the one they have for your skin too.
If you'll take my suggestion above, you can spray your clothes all year long for a couple of years and still not spend as much as you would if you use Sawyers for one season.
I checked Amazon. The 32 ounce bottle of 36.8% permethrin concentrate is $25.51 now. I found the mix ratio also. 2 ounces of the 36.8% added to a gallon of water will give you a whole gallon of .51% spray. At the current price for the bottle, $25.51 will get you 16 gallons of spray. That's $1.59 per gallon. Of course, you've got to buy a 1 gallon sprayer because you really should use a dedicated sprayer for this, but those are cheap.
well, I was in a hurry and just bought Sawyers rather than DIY and then hit the woods for 2 days of cutting and planting. I treated all my clothes w/ the Sawyers, one hunting buddy used some harcore kind of Cutter, and one guy didn't use anything. My pup got Sentried the night prior to going into the woods. No ticks on me, none on the pup, none on the Cutter-user, and 2 on the guy who went "commando." I'm sold. An ounce of prevention yaddah yaddah...
DIY or store bought, commando is not an option for this guy. call me a sissy all day. I have never had a tick successfully bite me yet. Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk
Spray has been doin me right so far. Not one tick on me as of yet n I've been up to my neck in weeds n brush going to check stands.
I've treated all my outdoor clothing since learning about it in Afghanistan in 2005. Last year my wife, the wise lady she is, convinced me to also buy rhino skin at bass pro. rhino skin is tight fitting under garments that over lap and seem to prevent the ticks from reaching the skin. I got the shirt, pants and socks and with them on basically only the hands and from neck up is unprotected. can get a bit warm during early season in Florida but otherwise is great added protection to go along with the treated clothing.
Have some questions on using permethrin or Sawyers. When spreading on Scent Lok clothing does it harm it? Are both safe for the skin? Do you spray all gear that is exposed to the elements, stuff outside your pack including your bow? Does it smell? It probably doesn't because you use it. Thanks.
I can't speak for scent lok, but if you have concerns, contact them. Permethrin is safe, after it dries. You should not spray it on you and you should be careful when applying it to stay up wind. I only spray the clothes I wear. It doesn't smell after it dries and airs out. I usually spray my gear a week or two before the season starts and let my clothes hang outside as long as the weather will permit (usually over the weekend) to air out. ~Bill
i usually do my own but was thinking about sending my stuff off this year. not a bad price considering the alternative. TickEncounter Resource Center > Prevention > Insect Shield Your Own Clothes good for 70 washes versus the 6 you get from DIY
