I will take a doe anytime, but especially during the rut. Nothing works better than a fresh decoy. Just drag her back to a few yards from the stand and position her like a bedded deer. I've watched younger less mature bucks try to mount a dead doe.
I usually shoot a doe early season. If that doesn't happen I'll try one late season. I'm usually shooting a doe a season. This past year I killed two. First time I've done that. I was helping a buddy thin does at his farm. I do enjoy shooting them. Good meat for the freezer and takes the pressure off to allow me to focus on the big boys.
I always get caught in the predicament "If I don't shoot this doe the big boy might come walking up behind her" so I usually pass. But sometimes I can taste deer jerky so much that I have to let the arrow fly!
I like shooting does. i feel its just another part of hunting. I would not in an area that doesn't have many does. Where I live there are a good population of does so I shoot as many as I can legally.
Where we hunt we only get one deer, either or, so it's hard to "hunt does" until the end of the season when you have given up on the "big one"
I don't shoot fawns or does that have fawns with them. The meat is the real trophy. People that hunt only for the antlers and give the meat away bother me.
I'll shoot a couple does a year. My family and myself love the meat. My only rules are I won't kill them out of my buck stands, I won't kill them after October 15ish or before December 15ish. I also won't shoot a doe with a fawn.
We're allowed 3 does and 2 bucks per season.....great meat for the freezer. But I won't shoot a doe if I see a fawn with her.
We have unlimited doe tags here in MD so if I feel like shooting and dragging it out, I will donate the meat to the homeless or get it processed for the landowner. (Once my freezer is filled) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I like to shoot them only if their numbers warrant it. Here in Michigan we hunt a couple different properties and some have low deer numbers, from heavy doe harvests, and others still have good numbers. In Ohio on our property the doe numbers are WAY down and for the most part we are not shooting any.
Here in MN it seems like deer numbers vary widely depending on where you are and if people practice QDMA and if you have good habitat. We Could easily shoot 5 does a year in addition to the 0-1 we get a year now and it would hurt a thing. 10 miles away at our other place if we shot 2 does we would kill our entire breeding stock... I guess thats why we only get one deer a year, either or.
I hunt does. Where the ladies are is where the guys will be. Nuf said sent from my electronic carrier pigeon
