Does anyone here have any experience with demolishing a home? I know costs vary widely, but based on experience, is it worth it? I would imagine it can get rather costly when you factor in permits, disposal, labor, etc.,

Around my way, if there is nothing funky... And there is any salvage it's running 12-16 per sqf.

Wow, I've heard $4-$6/sq.ft being the "norm." Everything is more expensive in NY, though:D

Edit, I should restate that. A lot of what I've read varies price wise. The $4-$6/sq.ft seems to be where most of the rates fall. Higher costs seem to be tied to hazardous materials, location, and permitting costs which obviously vary. I suppose at what point do you ask yourself if tearing a home down is worth the cost in addition to the land.

depending on how fast you want a home removed and where it is located, it can be close to free. If it is in the country, talk to the local fire department and see if they want to use it for practice over the weekend and then level it at the end of the training. I know it has been done before and volunteer fire departments love getting the chance for some live practice.

Razing a home in my area is not that expensive. Usually $3,500 to $7,500 is what I hear.

You could always go the cheap (and fun) route.

I've seen fire department burn them down for training before, it might be an outdated practice now. If they still do it it might be worth looking into.

Where's Caleb when you need him? It's funny you mention the fire department. My mom made that suggestion the other evening and my dad sort of scoffed at the idea.

We still do it, local fire departments are always looking for houses to burn. Problem is that it's usually not a very fast process. The house has to be pretty much gutted with all the new regulations and permits have to be applied for that take a amount of time to go through. So if your looking for a quick process that is not going to be your best option.

Time wouldn't be an issue. Cost savings would, though.

The last time I had help demo a house it cost around 10K. It was a 2 story colonial home that we took down to the foundation, but left the foundation in tack. After that we built a new house on the old foundation. If I had to guess on square footage, I think it was around 2400-2600 sq/f.

Around my part in New York is crazy, the permits alone will surprise you. Taking out the foundation and septic, They even have back fill requirements.
Now even most of the debris has to be sorted.
Forget about even thinking about a burn ...the DEP and DEC will be at the door with a law suit.

Insure the structure. Then have an unfortunate fire. You're golden.

    .

Yep! I started asking around to see what was involved and getting pricing. Said %&*@ this it can sit there and rot. NYS is utterly ridiculous! Costs of disposing, rules and regulations, etc... no thanks I have my handsfull running businesses in this God foresaken state.

    Been known to happen.....

Average size home with no asbestos remediation costs will typically run 5-8k in my area.

I recall one of the military divisions doing this when I lived in GA. Unfortunately I don't recall which branch/div...probably google-able though.

It sounds weird but last year we just posted one up on FB. A week later someone came by an tore the whole thing down. Didn't cost anything.
