I recently decided to up my scouting intensity and one of the things I'm looking at doing more of is using Topo maps. I've read up on the basics of how to read and interpret them and I am pretty comfortable with it. My problem is finding maps of my hunting area. Is there an easy way to access Topo maps electronically?

    Thanks!

Acme Mapper is nice. You can easily switch between topo & satellite images.

Have you ever tried placing a topo over an aerial image? I've been toying with it a little with AI, making the topo transparent and overlaying it on a aerial image. My first go around turn out ok have lots of work to do.

I would just add the isolines to the image.

This was a quick map with a 5 meter isoline interval. I have the free ESRI app on my phone, so I just add the line file to my account and I can place any base map I want under the lines, zoom, and see myself by gps.

I checked this out last night. Very nice and easy. I think that this will be what I use to plan my hunt this season.

I knew there was a better way. I haven't gotten around to trying ESRI yet. Been a few years since I've used it. Are the isolines on an available layer? or are you importing them from somewhere else?

I use acme like others have said.

Ill also screen shot the map and open in paint. I use that to roughly lay out information from scouting on the map. It really cut the learning curve by not having to memorize where I had seen deer travel. Actually connected 2 trails together that I had a hard time figuring out by adding a little to it scouting over the course of 2 years.

I download a free DEM, Digital elevation model. Most states have a Geographic Information Library. USGS also has free quality DEMs. From the DEM you can make an isoline file with line intervals of your choice using ESRI software. I can build the isoline file for your prop, county, or whatever and you can add them to your account. I can also make you a jpeg of any size and you can have it printed.

You can create maps on mytopo.com and then save the image electronically without having to pay. You can do aerials, topos, and aerials with the topo lines on them.

In addition to this you can download Garmin Basecamp. Then you can go to gpsfiledepot.com and download tons of free maps. If you walk property with a GPS and drop waypoints with a Garmin, you can synch with the Basecamp software and see everything on a topo with your waypoints on it. You can also easily toggle to google earth as well to see aerials while doing this. This is pretty much the first thing I do with every new property I get access too. Check it out here, outline spots I want to scout, walk it and drop waypoints........then bring the waypoints back into the mapping so I can see everything there and try to connect the dots with a game plan.

Are you using ArcGIS Explorer software? I you could build me some isoline files for Brown and Pike County Il? I'd really appreciate it. I have a plotter here at work so I'm all good on that front.

I have 10.2 with all extensions. How big do you want it? I did Pike county an it has a bunch of lines. Data for Illinois takes a little digging. I will make the jpeg any size you need, but you will need a big plotter or a smaller area. Pike County ISO.jpg
What color lines? Do you want the lines labeled? I might be able to narrow it down by township for better detail unless you can plot a few feet.

Perry east and west must make up elkhorn in brown? Couldn't find Elkhorn in the brown data. It would take a long time to create individual labels so I made classes for the lines. Once you figure out the plotter width I will add the image and make the actual map for printing. Perry.jpg
I can email the isoline file so you can add it yourself.
