No,not me people! This story starts back in 1984-85 school year when I met Dan Stoltz, a year older then me but a medium sized school you tend to know most people. We hunted together, fished, worked on cars, and did stupid stuff that probably should have killed us a couple of times. After high school we still hung out but like most people went our separate ways. Fast forward 20 years and who shows up on my Facebook page good old Dan, we picked up right where we left off a few pound heavier and missing some hair. Turns out Dan has a step son that loves hunting but hasn't shot a deer yet. I told them they could come up to my place and get him a deer. After a missed opportunity they came back for the Wisconsin gun deer season and Zachary connected on his first buck. While talking to Dan and Zachary the subject of bow hunting came up and why Dan didn't bow hunt anymore and why didn't Zachary bow hunt. After all the excuses were exhausted they both bought archery equipment. Dan’s first bow hunt since his teens was in October of 2012 being busy like most of us he could only make it out for one weekend. He called and asked if he could come up and hunt, I said of course and put him in a tree stand. After 15 minutes he had a doe come out in front of him but I put the brakes on him because of all the buck movement we were seeing. After an hour or so here comes this nice 10 pointer, Dan readies himself for the shot but it was a clean miss. I think he just caught the bug to bow hunt again, he was talking a mile a minute just like back in high school. October 24[SUP]th[/SUP] 2013, Dan calls to see what I was up to and if I was headed to my cabin for the weekend. After myself and his wife telling him to go he packed his gear and drove to north central Wisconsin Friday October 25[SUP]th[/SUP] for the afternoon hunt. I get a text telling me there is a spike buck in front of him, I text back put the phone away and hunt. Back at the cabin after the hunt I explained to Dan that there are only 2 reasons to text me. 1. Buck Down 2. I fell out of the tree. I don’t like movement playing with the phone adds to the hunt. October 26[SUP]th[/SUP] afternoon hunt begins for Dan around 2:00, I go to my stand around 4:30. Around 5:30 I fell my phone vibrating, I get a text from ME: “was it a good hit”. Me: “Which way did he go” Me: “Stay put I’m North of you” After the rest of us got done hunting we met Dan and started the track job. 100 + yards later we didn't find an 8, we found a 10 point. The first and only trail camera picture we ever got of this buck was 30 seconds before Dan ran his Carbon Express Mayhem Hunter 250 arrow with a Grim Reaper mechanical threw him, from his 2009 Hoyt Kobalt set at 48 pounds at 15 yards and took out both lungs. After inspecting the deer it appeared to be hit by a car not more than an hour before Dan shot him. During field dressing we found out that the car did do some internal damage and the liver was pretty much turned into Jello. Sorry about the crappy picture my point and shoot camera is a POS
And that's what friends are for. Convincing them to spend large sums of money on things that they probably don't need because they know they'll love every minute of it.. Congrats on the Buck and wrangling an old buddy into bowhunting.
Your a great guy and friend Dan! My hats off yo you. Congratulations to both of you! Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk
Great story, but you know he deserves a good ribbing, for hitting a deer that was already winged. I know my friends and family would be all over me if I shot a buck that had been hit by a car. Great job!
