I start on 11/1 my 37th annual 10 day rut hunt. As long as the wind stays true for that days stand selection I hunt till 230pm and call it a day. Most of my book bucks have been taken from 10am-2pm.
8 hour sit and I have had poor luck on evening sits during the rut. Besides 10 straight days of all day 11 hour sits is dangerous, no fun and almost physically and mentally impossible. Gun hunting in a shadow hunter? No problem.
I don't start until 2nd week of November. I started too early in the past and burned myself out. Never really saw great activity until Nov 6-7, and the best is Nov 10-20.
I started yesterday. I don't sit from dark to dark however. Whether it's 10-1130 or 1130 to 1 etc., I usually take about an hour and a half to eat, charge phone and take a quick nap. I let trail cams and activity dictate when.
I think if I tried to sit in a tree stand all day I'd jump out onto an arrow. Sitting for a few hours is fun, sitting all day is torture. More power to those of you that can do it. But if I did have the power to do it, I'd say its pretty darn close to time to start. I checked a spot today that hasn't had a single rub or scrap all season. I hunted there Thursday and there was nothing but saw several does. Today, full of rubs and scraps. The boys are going where the girls are! I have no problem sitting in a duck blind all day though but that's two TOTALLY different things.
I generally stick to all day hunts from Halloween till when ever. For some reason Halloween is the key every year. It could be the moon, the weather, the acorns, or that I haven't hunted all year and I'm ready damn it.
