Letting the little guy get his freak on?

Here are my 9 yr old sons specs on his bow.

Bear Apprentice II bow
21" Draw (approx. don't know for sure.))
25lb. Draw Weight.
Muzzy MX3 Fixed broadheads



He's been working really hard on his accuracy, and I'm confident that he'll hit his mark at 15 yards or closer. We're going out tomorrow morning. He'll be in a ground blind. I'll be right next to him guiding him.

I'm also confident that I can get "the doe" on our property to get that close.

Would you let him shoot?

I'm hesitant. I'd actually made up my mind, that he would not be shooting at an animal until at least next year. Simply because of the draw weight, but I don't know enough to make the decision.

So I put the weight on your shoulders. Would you let your son shoot at an animal at that draw weight?

Is there a standard draw weight that you can confidently say...."Ok, now you're ready to take an animal".


I just feel bad for the little bugger. But I've gotta do the right thing. I don't want a great experience to turn into a disaster.

 

i dont think the draw weight is enough thats just me

I would definitely look into the legality of that poundage. Most common theme I know of is must attain 40lbs. anywhere within a 28" distance.

 

o yea and when you get to the last bar that sais kinetic energy, just press enter it fills it out for you

 

I say wait until about 30-32lb

 

MD is a minimum of 30#.

 

Michigan has a 40 pound limit doing a quick search

 

NY is a minimum of 35lb draw...dont know about other states

Yeah, wasn't saying all states were 40. Just that its the most common number I've seen. In searching for MI I seen where someone said WI has a 30 pound minimum

 

O and get him like some G5 montecs cuz there cut on contact and youll get better penetration. that's just me. I think the smaller cutting diameter would focus more energy into the one little spot creating more penetration thus a better chance of recovering the deer. That's just me though

 

I knew what you meant, 40# minimum must keep a lot of kids out of the woods in MI

 

That's a cool little tool. Using it, it says he's good to go, but on the extremely light side. It puts him at 29.7...that's cutting it too close for me.

In response to the other post. Yes, he always goes regardless, we always have a good time, he's just itching to pull the trigger. He's definitely a hunter at heart.

 

There is no minimum draw weight in Michigan. It's up to the hunter/parent/guardian.

 

KS min is 45 last I checked...

To answer your question as bad as ya want it and I do understand, my answer would be NO.

 

Your right, that's the first state I've seen without a minimum.

 

Actually kind of hard to believe a state that lets the parents be parents.

 

That will get the job done but just make sure his bow is tuned to perfection. Keep the shots close and I prefer feathers for the light setup. They give better stabilization at the low speeds and will not hang up in the hide in case of full penetration.


I would also suggest cut on contact broadheads ONLY

Wow, I stand corrected. I just did a quick google and seen two different forums mention MI being 40. Sorry for posting bad info
