Well, I decided I want to get another truck. I'm nowhere near a mechanical person, and I can't find one to go with me. So, I need your guys' help on what to look for and be aware of. It's from a private party. I did a web search and found some real common things. I'd like to know the best way to make sure the motor and transmission are strong without having a mechanic look at it. I mean some things are obvious but... Thanks.
One thing I do is make sure the 4wd works. make sure there are no strange noises when driving down the road. ensure it doesnt pull to one side if it does id check the ball joints and parts around the tire. make sure the rotors arent destroyed and the pads are in good condition. look under it for bad oil leaks. and check all the windows to make sure they all work along with the heat and ac. good luck
Check the transmission fluid, if its very dark, or smells burned, I'd move on. Listen to the engine for knocking, check the exhaust for smoke. Other than that, drive it and see what you think. What are you looking at?
A 1995 Dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 reg cab long bed with 97000 miles. It doesn't have one of the notorious bad automatic trannies though from dodge.
All Dodge automatics are crap. Been there, done that. Watch for problems with power window/lock motors. Mine went through them like candy and they aren't cheap. The 5.9 isn't a bad choice, but they love fuel.
Personally I would never buy a used vehicle from a private party. Even though it may cost a little more, I would buy one from a dealership - that way you have a place to complain to if it's a lemon.
The drivers door power window doesn't work. That's supposed to be the only the thing wrong with the truck. It's not all rusty either. And its got an aftermarket tranny with receipts.
Thats about $100 if you can fix it yourself. The dealership charged me about $300 each time. Do you have a friend that knows cars to go with you?
I'd start here then. Official Kelley Blue Book New Car and Used Car Prices and Values Depending on the condition (in my area anyway) it should be priced between $2800-4000. Good luck!
Complain all you want but the majority of dealerships sell used vehicles as-is meaning they won't fix a damn thing on it if you don't find it until after you purchase.
Look at the tires for unusual wear. This will tell you if there are problems with ball joints control arms and tie rods Sent from my SGH-T959 using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
Wrong. As long as you are realistic with what you are asking, and it's a legitimate complaint, you kick up enough stink someone eventually will help you. I know this from experience. Not saying this works all the time, but buying privately you have zero chance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Afraid not my friend, legally they aren't required to do a damn thing if you bought it as-is. Already went through that here in Alabama with this diesel truck I bought. Lemon law doesn't apply to used vehicles, and the as-is no warranty means it's my wallet that pays for it.
Selling for under blue book is one red flag. Not necessarily anything, but I'd be telling a private of dealership that I want to take it to a mechanic of my choice before buying.
lol.. As a for the truck, my neighbor has a late 90's dodge (dually) and it has served him pretty well. My dad drives a 97 F250 gasser, he has had nothing but problems with the automatic transmission. I personally believe buying a truck with a manual tranny is the way to go with trucks that old. I'm no expert though.
