Saturday we planted buckwheat in our last years brassica plots. The ground turned up extremely well except for a new plot that needed a couple tiller passes New plot I planted some leftover oat seed from 2yrs ago with the buckwheat to add more organic matter when tilled in this fall. Not sure if it will grow or not but we'll see. Also mowed and fertilized a few clover plots planted last fall in the winter rye mix. Fertilizer used was 0-14-42
This will be the first time. Most of the plots are in their third year of planting. Soil is good but not quite where I would like it to be. PH is in the mid 6's after two years of applying lime but organic matter is low. Hoping the buckwheat can help me with that.
Looks good! I have to go check on my buckwheat plot this weekend. We got ours in mid-May. It also went in last years turnips. We'll till it under this fall for clover/rye/oats. Deer around here do actually hit it pretty good.
Planted my buckwheat with some sunflowers mixed in this year. Got it in a couple weeks ago, 2-3 inches tall already with the good growing weather this year. My deer hammer it.
I'm hoping the deer won't hammer them like they did my brassica plots last year, tops gone by end of September. We'll see in a couple weeks.
Nice tractor set up and plots look great. Keep us updated!. (If you are looking into building organic matter, check out Plot Max in the Antler King link in my signature, or Pm me with any questions)
Germination! It was a little thin but I seen a lot of seed starting to germinate. I'll update in 2-3 weeks when I'm back out there. Along with checking on the buckwheat, we planted a little over an acre of RR corn around the perimeter of one of our larger clover plots. Hoping this will help screen the plot. Also planted 1 acre of eagle beans in one our 2 acre fields. We'll plant the other acre in brassicas towards the end of July early August.
We planted about 10 acres of buckwheat at the duck hunting club i worked for last summer. Its kind of "finnicky" to plant If you dont lightly disc over it after planting it, it wont come up at all for some reason. Seems to be no in between, its either a carpet or nothing at all.
Do the deer wait till they flower to start munchin on em or did they as they were growin? Mine are about 6 inches high already an have seen TONS of tracks through it but can't really tell if their eatin it
I noticed the deer by me started to eat it when it was 2 feet tall. Everywhere is different. Fuzz_27= Only way to tell is put up a seclusion cage about 2 feet in diameter. That way you can monitor the plant growth if the deer are kept away from it and plant can grow un disturbed.
