I know this is a little early to be worrying about this but what would you guys suggest for a cheap scent control ritual? I'm really not looking to spend money on some "scent-be-gone" in a bottle and my grandpa has always told me to just hang my clothes up by the fire to make them smell like smoke. This has worked for me through the years as I have not yet been busted by a deer smelling me (knock on wood). But I was wondering if anyone else had any kind of "homemade scent control"?
Baking Soda. You can take it as far as you want. Sprinkle a little baking soda in the tote you keep your clothes in. Wash your clothes in it. Don't buy all that expensive scent killing stuff. You can make some of this as well with Baking soda: http://www.deeranddeerhunting.com/article/the-best-way-to-inhibit-your-scent/
I use pine tree bark and limbs because I hunt in a lot of pine trees. I put it in my container that holds my clothes and boots and it works very well for me. I ALWAYS hunt the wind!
I've never heard of pine limbs before but thats a great idea, I'm going to have to give that a shot. Maybe throw an apple in there too
It works really well. Scrape some of the bark off of it to make it really smell. I do that a few days before I hunt and it works really well. Also rub the green pines needles all over your gear. It activates the oils in the needles. I got some doe urine on my hand last year and I grabbed a few green pines needles, rubbed them on my fingers for 5-10 seconds and the smell was gone! Just raw pine scent.
I like baking soda too. I am also partial to putting a few cedar branches in the tote with my hunting clothes. The cedar smell stays a long time.
So going along with this, do you guys just use a normal rubbermaid tote to keep your clothes in or is it necessary to get the fancy scent lok totes that are damn near $100 bucks?
If your going on the cheap, yep baking soda will work. In addition scent wafers placed in a sealed tote tub work great and last for years as they regenerate when you put them back in there container. Really scent control detergent is not that expensive and IMO works great as well as scent cover sprays. The Tinks B tech is really good stuff!
i cut some pine limbs and keep my camo in a bin with it, hunt the wind and theres no need to buy any products
I just use the regular totes that have a lever type lock that flips over the end. Something like this:
I use detergent that is free from scent and UV brighteners. Look in baby stores for sensitive skin formulas for this. I use a plastic tote with a flip top lid to store my stuff in. Any holes it may have got taped up with packing tape. Instead of scent wafers, I throw in some pouches of activated charcoal (fish tank filter media) to keep any foreign scent out. For cover scent, either campfire smoke, or spray down with vanilla extract solution. If I'm hunting in an area with pine or cedar, I'll throw a few clippings in the box with my clothes. Thanks for the great tips guys! Looks like my lighter sealed garbage bag is going to be obsolete soon.
Cheap Scent Control...I have used this product called Carbon Synergy with my Tinks B-tech wash and spray. Store in a sealed container. Change at the hunting location and hunt the wind. If you dont believe in scent control, you must not hunt in the hills of the midwest like I do where the wind shifts all the time and is never what the weather report says it is. I have heard about pine needles, cones, leaves, ect. Use what is around your hunting area as a mask scent.
Wash the clothes in baking soda and put them in a scent free garbage bag or Rubbermaid container with a pine tree branch and some leaves/grass. I have also heard of using a teaspoon of vanilla extract and a few drops of maple syrup mixed with water on the bottom of the boots - it's a curiosity type attractant rather than a cover. To be honest though, I buy all my cover scent on Amazon for about 20%-30% cheaper than the stores.
