10/23 1/26 Ill get the pictures posted to a scorecard once they get that set-up. Shedding is just starting here in MT. Still a ton of snow on the ground, any sheds on north face bedding areas are likely covered still.
Youngfart Checking in, to much snow here for the time being, might get out next weekend though. Nice finds Back. Rocky
Checking in, I went out a few weeks ago to look but no luck. Ill try to get out one day this week and see. Back Country those are some great finds I wish I lived somewhere i could find elk antlers. None of those anywhere around Connecticut!
Hey fellas, Buckeyered checking in, haven't been in the woods in a couple of weeks but will try to do my part. Have to admit that I am kinda new to this shed hunting deal, so any tips and advice will certainly be appreciated. Nice sheds Pastorandrew & Backcountry
Checking in. Took my first glance out on Saturday the 26th. Good snow cover yet in some areas, no sheds yet.
Went back out yesterday. Just too much snow here. South slopes are clearing off decently but the north slopes won't be huntable for a while. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
Made it to the woods this evening, didn't find any sheds but sure enjoyed the evening, temp was 48°... Nice
Keep at it! Wish we had some of that warm weather here. We need to get a captain laid out for the team as well. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
Just checking in. Havent been out in Wisconsin yet this year, but I found two old sheds in Nebraska when I was gun hunting out there though. I will post pictures whenever I get the next chance.
OK, I was able to get in the woods again this evening to do a little shed hunting, took my daughter along to help. We where unable to find any, however we did run across three different rubs. This got me to wondering, where is the most likely place that sheds are found? For example : bedding areas, trails, rubs, ect.? We where excited to find the rubs and my daughter wants to continue to help me look... Another enjoyable evening in the woods. Temp was 60°. God Bless... Steve Steve
I am by no means good at this game but this is my usual approach. Obviously the name of the game for deer in the late season is food and minimal movement. I usually look for the easiest food source with a close (<200ish) bedding area and hit both of those spots plus likely travel routes to and from. Stream, fence, and log crossings are great places to look. Walk slow, crawling slow. I stop every 15-20 yards to do a quick 360 as well. I'm sure some others will have great input. Backcountry, thanks for the info, looks like I am on the right track as this is kinda what I was doing but I might have been moving a little bit fast. Church service tonight for us so may try again tomorrow evening Steve
Sorry Backcountry, tried to get your quote in one of them "blue boxes " but I couldn't figure out how. Maybe I can get one of the kids to show me how to work this thing later. Steve
Check Fence crossings where the bucks jump the fence, this jars the antlers loose. Follow main trails to feeding area and bedding areas also, watch for late season rubs where they'll disloge them there too. Any where, where there's a place to jump be it a fallen tree or something in thier way on the trail or a ditch or small creek where they'll jump, again this will jar the antlers loose. My 2 cents,LOL. Not worth much huh! Good luck all!Still got 3 feet of snow here with warmer temps coming this weekend, higs of +4 by Saturday, right now it's -28 . Open feilds where the farmers left bails out for the winter, glass the fields with in 200 yards of either side of the bails and look for anything that looks like a branch sticking up,don't pass it up,it just maybe that one link your looking for, also the sun will reflect of the antler too so there's another hint that it's an antler. Sunny days are better to look too because of the reflection issue! Rocky
Youngfart, thanks for passing on the tips, I'm sure I will have more questions for you guys. Temp is falling here and should be in the teens by Friday, sure having some weird weather here in Ohio this January. God Bless Steve
Way to go Troy! Snow is finally settling around here, will get out again this week. Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk 2
