I saw this on another site. One guy dilutes scent-free soap and puts it in one of his kid's bubble bottles. when he wants to check the wind, just pull out the wand and blow a few bubbles. He said you can see them out to 50 yds with ease and can really see what the wind is doing away from your stand. Have any of you ever tried this? I believe I'll try it at home tonight. Lily will probably let me borrow one of hers.

Pretty creative idea...it wouldn't work in cold temps though.

Keep a small bottle in an inside pocket and it wouldn't freeze. It doesn't get cold enough here for it to freeze instantly upon release. If it does up there well, that sucks for you! LOL!

You might be right...i'm not sure how quickly sub freezing temps would effect the bubbles?

I suppose tree's would be another enemy of the bubble too :deer:

I would think that in sub freezing temps they would hit the ground pretty quickly. Trees, well, ya may have to blow a few to get one through! I have a stand set up in my yard. I'll try it tonight and see how they do. depending on the wind direction there are a bunch of trees to get in the way.

Just don't blow to hard it might alarm the deer.
Or you'll spit all over yourself, especially if you chew!!!:deer:

Yeah you have definitelly never seen me trying to blow bubbles, the deer would get a good laugh out of it if they saw me.

If you blow hard a couple times the deer might think it's a snort weeze and come right over

That's also a great way to pass time in the stand - beats reading a book I guess. Anybody else have any creative ideas to check the wind. I use milkweed pods that have dried in my garage - those little seed tufts are light as can be and their white color makes them easy to watch at a distance. Just keep them in a ziplock bag in my coat.

That does sound like a cool idea!! Im sticking to the one i have as i like it the best so far of all i have tried. Cant remember the name but its fuzzy red yarn wadded up in a plastic sleeve that i keep attached to the outside of my safety vest. Just pull a fuzzy and let it go.I dont even have to find it in my pockets!1

Good idea. Another good one Ive done in the past is grab a few milkweed pods and they work as well. You can get a whole seasons worth in a few pods. I just put them in a side pocket of my pack in a baggie and take one out when I need a fresh pod and put it in my pocket while hunting.

Let me know what brand of soap you use. I'd be interested in trying it myself.

I like Rob's method. He always carries a spool of thread with him. Cut a peice off and tie it to a branch, You just need a glance to see what the wind is doing, no extra motion when the time comes to know.

I tried it last night. I used Hunter's Specialties Scent-Away soap. The green liquid in the bottle. I diluted it with water about 50/50. the bubbles stayed in the air for quite a distance. The longest were 80-100 yds. winds were 10 mph from the south. They made it through trees quite well, some popped of course but all in all I like it!
