Need a good bradhead for pig hunting! Just started bow hunting so don't know what I'm doin!!!! i stand in front of a wall of broad heads in a dazz!!! thanks for your imput!
G5 Montecs would be great. They are a thick strong solid fixed blade cut on contact head. Hogs can be tough, so you want a tough head. Not some thin blade head or some sissy expandable head. Also, they fly pretty darn good too.
I use a G5 Tekon for deer. Never hunted hogs, but if this broadhead does half the damage it does to a deer, on a hog. You'll be all set.
I shot my pig with a G5 montec. You want something real solid, I say any broadhead thats all one piece is a good selection. Also i would recommend using a heavy arrow, But that all depends on your setup.
i agree with montecs/ hell razors/ mx3`s...ect any small cutting deep penetration tip is good for getting through those tough shoulder blades, good luck
Montecs are super tough. Magnus Stinger Buzzcuts are tough also and would be my choice if i were to shoot a fixed blade
See my post "Boar Hog Down." I love Muzzy 4 blade 125s for deer but I did not get enough penetration with them to bring down a really big hog. Bruce put me on to some 2 blade Safari Outbacks but they do need sharpening. I have killed almost 50 hogs with a bow... Thick bladed cut on contact is the way to go... you have got to get penetration to do the job. Multi-blade heads are going to cost you penetration, especially with a big boar.
Single Bevel Broadheads...look up Alaska Bowhunting they make one of the toughest broadheads on the market and physics cause it to have THE best bone bust through power out there. Hog shoulder bones is the hardest bone to get through in North America and while we don't plan on hitting it, design me an arrow for when everything goes wrong not when everything goes right.
You can't avoid the 1-2 inch thick shield on a big boar... you've got to go through it. They will run off with your arrow and simply snap it off an inch behind the blade unless you get through it. I am still working on my arrow design... I think I may go with FMJs Dangerous Game and a single bevel head. Right now I am trying to find a good sharpener. Alaskan Bowhunting makes one... any experience with it?
They do but hang on I have found from others (not first hand myself but others swear by them included Bruce here)... http://www.centaurarchery.com/sharpener.htm Or a similar model. I am sure it takes a touch of time to get really good at it, but if you use the proper steps and oil/wax stuff in their video it should produce a scary sharp edge. I plan on picking up this one or a similar one in the spring for when I go to the samurai or massai heads by Alaska Bowhunting for deer next year (and boar in Texas possibly).
I received the Outback heads... I am just having a little trouble getting the kind of edge I need. Cool heads though... very tough. Texas pigs are sissies.
hey thanks for the info!!! im going to do some buying!!!! i live in ga and its not real abnormal to hear of farmers here with groups up 40 in there fields!!! all it take is permision to hunt!!!!
I have three leases just for hogs and looking for a forth. When deer or turkeys show up that's just a bonus. Hogs do not die easy so a bad shot will mean a long blood trail and no hog at the end of it. Make a great shot or none at all. IMO Take it from a guy who's been on a few of those blood trails. Great fun though. Good luck.
Hog hunting is about all we do here any more. I have been using the NAP 2 Blade Bloodrunners with no problems, and great holes.
Kind of curious if anyone on here hunts hog with swhacker? I am planning a Texas hog hunt for May, and plan on using my 1.75" 100gr swhackers. There is no doubt about their toughness, just wondering if I should worry about penetration with them? Hate to change my setup, I'm yet to find a broadhead that shoots as consistently as my field points as swhacker.
