Say a guy was hunting with his recurve bow and 3 arrows. The hunter missed 1 deer and makes a non fatal shot on 2th deer, but it drops the deer, and the 3rd /final shot misses the vitals. Is it legal finish off the deer with a knife, by cutting its throat?

Please help me settle an on going debate between friends.

Legal or not, it would be the ethical thing to do IMO...

There's no laws against it in GA or TN. My uncle has actually done it a few times when my cousin has made a non-lethal shot.

Is it addressed in the rules and regulations?

In the two states I hunt it does not address it at all in the regs. Now our regs down here seem a little more relaxed then up your way.

I have done it several times shotgun hunting here in Ohio. Mostly on deer drives where there is a spine or gut shot. Also i have come to believe that a quick stab to the heart with a hunting knife will do the job just as quick.

I've witnessed It and done It for other people's deer when tracking them In the dark. Legal or not If I feel I'm In a decent position to do It without getting the crap kicked out of me by the deer I'll do It. I have no Idea though If It's legal, chances are It Is I bet.

I havent looked into it or anything but I bet if you were to call your local DNR they would tell you that it is fine if it will end any kind of suffering.

not sure if it's legal, but have heard of it being done to dispatch the animal. But one thing I know for sure, you better not do that outside shooting hrs. Believe it or not, but it is considered poaching if it's not in the legal time frame, and that includes using your bow.

I know for a fact that my brother has done it at least 4 times. All on gun-shot deer that were fatally hit but still twitching.

IE - i would shoot and the deer drops on the spot but keeps breathing for a few minutes. Seems like the right thing to do is cut the throat. But, we find this doesnt always help the process. Heart stabs have been rumored to work better.

I've done this once on a spine shot deer. The heart stab is best, took about 5 seconds. I've seen a lung stab with a 5 inch blade on a deer that was hit by a car that took about 20 seconds for the deer to expire. Not sure of the legality but it is the right thing to do IMHO.

Killing a deer with an "un-authorized" hunting tool?

Some Parks and Wildlife departments have some screwy rules. Not sure if you can legaly do it or not in Texas.....

I'm 99% sure you can't legaly kill a uninjured/healthy deer with a knife in Texas. But as far as dispatching one.....I'm not sure
