We planted 5 plots ranging from an 1/8 acre to 1/2 acre this past weekend. The ground seemed to still be holding a decent amount of moisture when we tilled and we got lucky with a quick shower Sat. night and a couple decent showers Sunday evening. We have 60% scattered showers Wed. and Thurs. so i'm keeping my fingers crossed. All plots were seeded with a mix of DER, Appin Turnip, Pasja Hybrid, PTT and Goundhog radish. Plot 1 Notice the loaded apple tree on the center left of plot Plot 3 Plot 5 after we finished the day. The left side is planted with brassica blend and the right side will be fall planted winter rye, oats, peas, clover and radishes. It might be a little early but 90 days would put us in the middle of October. I'll update in two weeks when we go back to plant a couple more.
Looking Good You're Lucky we have NO apples this year I put in clover/chickory in a 1.5 acre plot and brassicas in 2 small 1/4 acre plots and powerplant in 1/2 acre plot... we finally got some rain so hopefully they will get a boost.. the beans in the power plant are doing well, but everything else was stunted a bit by the lack of rain.... Good luck on your plots
Took me a bit to find the pics from back then. The mix turned out really well and the deer had all of the tops gone by mid October if I remember correctly.
This is about the size of the plot that I can do this year. This will be my first year attempting to do this. Where did you buy your mix? Also, when did you plant it? Thanks!
You should be able to buy everything he used at your local Coop. Otherwise, Welters seed will have everything you need.
Based on the original post it looks like he planted in the first week in July. Pretty standard to plant from July 15 to the end of the month. Good luck and make sure you give that kind of mix some nitrogen and sunlight and it will work.
Like brad said, I bought the seed from my local co op. Mid July works well for planting in my area, but since you are in a more northern climate with an earlier frost, you may want to plant earlier. Also, being that you are from Minn., you may want to look at some of the new Monster Raxx blends coming out this year. I planted a few of them this past fall and they did very well.
Thanks for the insight on Monster Raxx, I am a noob when it comes to all of this. I have a friend with a tractor that is going to till up the area and mix in the seed, so that will be helpful.
