My buck from 2 seasons ago had busted points everywhere and I was still tickled with him but I just went with the euro. If he had no broken points I would have done a shoulder mount but. But I will not have it fixed unless (like already stated) it broke after the shot, then I probably would.
The more I think about it; I think I would fix it if I had history with the deer. With a deer like Mr. Clean, if he had a snapped g2, I'd fix it. I'd want to show off everything he grew/carried.
I had that dilemma in 2010 and actually told my taxi to fix broken points. I called him after thinking about it, left it as-is not as-was. He had @ 2" drop on his right mainbeam and busted some of his G-1 off also. Mine didn't quite make P&Y, but if repaired, I don't think they qualify for the Book.
My 153" 10 point from last year was actually a 12 but had stickers broke off his left G2 and G3. I opted not to repair these as I felt it gave my buck character and I wanted to leave him how I shot him.
Only way I'd ever consider fixing a rack post shot would be if it got broken post shot...rare occurance and may never happen, but only even that would cause me to consider it.
Same here, it happened on the first deer I ever shot with a bow. He went 40 yards a** over tea kettle and busted his main beam off a couple inches up from the base. After alittle epoxy, he was as good as new well almost.
Not really what you are getting at, but the first buck or deer for that matter that I ever killed was an 8 pointer. Shot it in the spine, as it got up to run I was walking toward it, decided to put another one in him - shot him and he was down. Got up to him and the shot had gone in around the ear and sheered of the antler from the base. I couldn't have made that shot again if I tried, nor would I want to. Anyway, had him doctored up and put back together by the taxidermist!
If that is the way it was when I shot it then that is how he stays. I shot one a few years back that had broken it's main beam off right at the G3 and busted up a bunch of other tines as well. He's euro mounted just like that. The only way I'd get one fixed is if he lost something after the shot.
Ran into this this year with my dads buck. He kind of wanted to get it fixed. Debated back and forth about it. We finally decided that we had no picks of him before his stuff was broken and that in all reality we really didn't know what he had there to begin with, and either way this was a kick *** buck. Also, this is how he was he shot him so this his how he should be mounted. Sorry have to have a link to flickr. For whatever reason it never works when I try to post directly to the site anymore. http://www.flickr.com/photos/78816010@N04/7457039856/
I've gotten one of mine repaired and you'd never know and I don't even think about it when I look at it. There was no extra charge and it was relatively simple for the taxidermist to repair. It was a 17 point so nobody really pays much attention to each point.
I got a couple blood, their like having Salma Hayek for a wife but she only has one boob! I'm going to get them fixed some day.
I agree with the way they were shot they way they stay! Crick you have seen mine and they are all busted up.
This is just a personal decision. If it looks better to you to see it fixed then there is no shame in doing it. If you want it to look more like the way he grew then fix it. If you want it to be the way you killed it then leave it. I like a rack to show off all the glory of how it was grown. I wouldn't reconstruct the entire rack but a point or two that is easy to fix then I would do it. Of course you can't have it scored for the book but you can do it if it looks better to you. You will be the one looking at it on the wall for years to come.
If I shoot then I must have been happy with him so that is the way He will stay....I know a few guys that fix every point and I know for symmetry wise that have a point but it is just not the same animal if you doctor it up....
