I killed this one in 2010 in Colorado. I do like the look, and I really think your final display depends on how it gets handled in the field and how your taxidermist takes care of it. It is some very fragile material that can be dinged and torn very easily and if your taxi doesnt know what he's doing, then it really gets bad. This one was just beginning to shed so he looks rough, but he also looks exactly like he did when I shot him which is what I always want.
I haven't ever had an opportunity with Arkansas season always begining Oct 1. The AGFC has changed opening day to Sept 15 this year, so there's a better chance but most bucks here will have their velvet stripped off by then.
Killed 4 early September caribou while still in velvet, that said the last two caribou bulls I killed weren't...later in the season and I really enjoyed the change.
The velvet has to be stripped off, like if you wanted to enter it in Pope and Young or Boone and Crockett
I would love to kill a velvet whitetail as well... It's tough in MN/WI... the season starts a little too late. But, I did have a chance at a velvet spike back in 2001... farted and he took off.... his nick name was fart velvet from then on. My hunting partner grant was there... videoing... i can't find the footage, I wish I could. Neal
Dean how cool is that? and RARE!! Thanks for digging that out. Love the pics guys, those are some fine trophys, keep the pics rollin!
The velvet doesn't bother me, but I don't have an itching desire to go out and get one. I like the look of polished bone alot more. Nice trophys in here though!
Killed an 8pt here in Louisiana on Oct 2 that was still in velvet. He was in a bachelor group of 3 bucks. I shot him not knowing the last buck was there and of course he was the bruiser of the group! It was 93 degrees that evening and I wondered what in the heck I was doing in a bow stand.
I don't personally care about the velvet either, however the prospect of bow hunting on a non resident tag in September (a month before my bow season ope s) is pretty exciting! If it results in a velvet buck down, even better!
I shot this in AK, had the Antlers treated by a specialist. We named him "Rex" and he is the only trophy I have ever shot.
I'd like to, just for the fact of hunting in early season. If I did kill one in velvet, I'd want it to have velvet hanging down like trevors! I keep hoping that one of these days maybe I'll get an invite from a guy named Tim to go hunt ND with him.
x2!! Our bow season comes in the 2nd Saturday in September and very rarely do you see any with velvet on them....If you do it is usually a real small buck....
That is an awesome buck JoeJoe!! If you are going to get one it better be on opening weekend lol..... Nice NC buck anyways... Welcome to the Forums btw!!
