Initially, this project started out with me wanting to thin out an abundance of maple trees in an area where there there are a lot of white oaks. My idea was to let the oaks thrive without competition from the maples and to allow new oaks to grow. Maples are fast growing and out compete the oaks. This area is in a gully coming off the north side of my ridge. Once I started clearing, my brother suggested that I also make a food plot in the center of the gully. I thought "why not". So far I'm a little over half done. Probably 30-40 feet wide and about 150 feet long. I've been putting old logging crowns, stumps and brush off to the sides making "walls" that the deer will have to travel around in order to enter the plot. I've been keeping the good logs for firewood. Cut them into 9" lengths and carry them back to my log rack area. Once the plot area is cleared, I may do some hinge cutting on the other side of the "walls". Here it is so far. Cherry tree that was already down. Looking back the other way. Thats awesome man.... I wish I had equipment like that to turn some of my spots into better hunting holes. Gotta love when a plan comes together
I agree and I'd consider not just cutting them out...I'd hinge some over along the edge to accomplish more light, better security and encourage better browse for the deer.
