Can i do this or do i risk being detected by deer? like if i spit in a bottle will they be able to smell it still and then will they stay away? Im just wondering because i need something to do to pass the time.

I chew, i dont dip so its not like minty smelling or anyting. just smells like tobacco (Red Man).
please no nagging me about the health risks, i know its bad for you. thanks

I dip all the time in stand and have several deer right under me not seem to care at all.

have you ever had an old deer do that? Like 5 or older? just curious.....you can get away with lots of stuff with younger deer...I peed on a button buck once and he just stood there:lol:

Both! Haven't had any old deer come by so not sure how that would go. If you search the forums you will find a thread about this from a year ago or so. Wish I could smoke a cigar on stand but know that wouldn't work.

If the smell doesn't deter a mature buck maybe all the movement will. I wouldn't chew in the stand, if you need something to pass the time just think of what you feel like in the off season when you want to be in a stand.

There is a chance it will cost you the buck of a lifetime it is not worth the risk.

Guys who dip will say it does not bother them, guys who dont will say it does, or why risk it. guys who have quit will say how much better their hunting is.....not the guys above, but that is where this thread will go. I dipped on stand for a long time, and I quit going on 4 years ago and have not dipped at all since. I have noticed zero difference. Does that mean I did not get busted from dipping, no...does it mean I dont get busted now, no. I killed my 2 largest deer with my bow inside 25 yards, one with a dip and one without a dip, so basically my opinion is useless...lol

I killed my 151" buck this past season with a dip in. Killed him at 30 yards, slightly down wind. I spit in a bottle for a few minutes, then just swallow it.

I usually have a dip while i'm hunting. My biggest bucks have been with a rifle from a ways away so I'm not sure in that aspect but I've shot mature does (two that I guessed to be close to 5 years old) with my bow with a dip in and none of them have seemed to mind. I've even had one come and lick the ground where I've been spitting. And my grandpa has told me a story of chewing beechnut and spitting into the snow and having a buck come and eat it.

I've seen this topic come up a number of times and just shake my head every time. Shouldn't everyone's ultimate goal be to enter the woods completely undetected and stay that way? It's just another variable that may or may not affect your hunting. I personally put way to much effort into deer hunting to fluck it up with a maybe, maybe not type of thing when I have the ability to control it.

It's another reason to quit, like we need one...

I am ashamed to say I am a tobacco users. I don't do it prior to or while hunting deer. Dang, I just need to quit once and for all and be done with it. I could buy more "stuff" I don't need.

Come to think of it, the 150" I killed two years ago was shot with a dip in  He was up wind though

just throw one in and don't worry about it, it's no different than chewing gum as far as movement/smell.

several of my buddies have shot decent bucks with a dip in and i too have dipped in the stand and cant say that i have seen a difference. In my opinion though if i was going for a monster i wouldnt want the dip to be the difference between harvesting him and just another "one that got away" story.

I use too! I no longer dip or smoke. I have seen a doe up wind of me right after smoking. I have also had to hold spit in because I was surrounded by deer.

The bigger question is this. Do deer associate the smell of dip with humans? I say no. We're giving them way more credit then they deserve.
