BigStick is correct. The good stuff in these products, Permethrin, is scentless. As I mentioned before, I use the Sawyer brand stuff and once applied to your clothing and dried, there is no smell to it at all. But it kills ticks on contact. I started using the stuff two seasons ago and never had an issue with ticks since. I've find a few on me here and there, but they're dead. Last spring turkey season I happened to watch a tick that must of just jumped on me. He was on my pant leg and made it about 3 inches before he stopped, dead in his tracks. Get some Sawyer tick spray and rest easy. I still double check myself each time I get home, but its a lot easier on the mind knowing that most likely I don't have any on me to begin with.
Permethrin is the ticket for sure. Simple and effective. I don't use any other type of repellent in the woods. I keep my skin covered from head to toe in clothing that has been pre-treated in Permethrin, and haven't had any issues since I started using it. I've used it on my hunting clothes, all of my camping clothes and the clothes I wear when I go work out in the woods. Can't stand them little bastards.
I can't remember the last time I had a tick on me here in LA. I get out pretty often so too. I guess they either don't like me or it's not bad down here.
Yes. It is not to be used as a direct contact repellent. I hang my clothes out on a line, spray them well on both sides, let them air dry out then store them until I use them. The spray should last through several washes and is supped to last at least 6 weeks. I've only treated my clothes one a season and it has worked fine for me. 1st Time Hunter, NO, it is not a not to be used like a traditional insect repellent, for clothing only.
I use Vectra for flea and tick control on my dog it's good for 1 month once you've put it on your dog and let stand for 24 hrs. The chemical element causes ticks to heat up and die. Currently the company that makes this stuff is going under changes and using it has proven to be to strong for some dogs. But I highly recommend it.
A lot of flea and tick control for dogs already has permethrin in it. A look at a popular topical ointment for dogs shows the following as active ingredients: Imidacloprid Permethrin Pyriproxyfen.
But beware if you have cats, permethrin is toxic for them. I'm not sure what the possible exposure risks are with the topical ointment but if you have cats and dogs and they have frequent physical contact with each other, I'd be careful.
Just took a walk around my property today, probably had about 30 on my pants. I used this stuff though and they seemed to just fall off.
Every spring we spray our yard with Myathylon. It does a great job of eliminating ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests. Best of luck!
Thats what I use and recomend. treating your cloths is the way to go. Ill be buying alot of it to hunt Turkeys and mushrooms this spring!
How can you guys say the Sawyers tick spray is scent free? I use it frequently and can absolutely smell it.
There are different application styles that Sawyer's offers, including a pump spray and an aerosol. In either case, there may be some odor when applying it. That should go away after the product has had a chance to dry though.
I hate them too! I am completely freaked out by those dang things. Everybody makes fun of me because nothing really grosses me out, but they make me squirm! Last year we planted trees on our land at the cabin and between my daughter and I we probably had over 100 ticks. It was disgusting! I no sooner got done picking off ticks and looked again and there were more. Ugh! There is no doubt I will be buying this stuff now, spray it on my clothes, and then test it out in a few weeks for turkey hunting.
Not sure if you guys saw this. http://www.bowhunting.com/publisher...11/NEW-Spray-Kills-Lyme-Disease-Carrying-Tick Going to try it this year for sure. Been pulling them off the dogs for about 2 weeks now.
