Just thought Id share! It started in the 2011 Shed season as me and my oldest were shed hunting togeter. We were cutting across a corner of a small woods headed toward another woods when my son yelled Big shed. He was on one side of a giant fallen tree and I was on the other. His side was the better side LOL. Him and the 65" shed last season. We looked all over for the other half and even came back weeks later incase he had dropped it later, but never found it. Just a week later Dalton was driving home from school, and when he got home he ask me if I had seen the Dead Big bodied Deer dead just off the highway not far from where he had found the Shed. I hadnt but drove to the spot and checked it out. My heart sunk as it was a Hugh bodied Buck with two very large bloody spots on his head from shedding. I immediatly knew it was our Boy we had planed to hunt. Again we looked for the other half with no luck. As time went by every time I drove by the scavengers had moved what was left of the carcass toward the wood line 100 yards off the hwy. I later found the skull picked clean with the two large pedicals where the sheds had fallen. I left it lay. Fast forward to Saturday 2/18/2012 Me and Dalton were on a shed hunt in the next woods over from where he had found the Shed. He went his way and me mine. I had just found an old shed, and snapped a pic when I heard him yell he had found one. We like pics so I went to him and had a decent Shed that we missed last season. I decided to go back to my spot since I still had alot of area to cover. I went to the exact place I had found the shed in hopes of finding the other. It was thick with briars and I was trying to manuver around when I spoted the other half deep in a briar patch. I had walked within 10 yards of it minutes ago and last season had to of just missed it. You almost had to be on top of it to see it. I was excited to finally find it but bummed because he was dead. I decid3ed to collect the skull and hold both halves on it to get an Idea what he looked like. Here both halves on the skull. He would have been in the 150's Dalton dont know it yet but after the friendly shed hunting competition we have Im going to give my half.
Sad about the buck dieing but very cool story !! Congrats to both of you !! He was a very good buck !!!!! Tim
Awesome story bud! I wish you would have had a better ending, but at least you got some more closure on him. It's amazing how we can just miss out on finding these sheds sometime. My number one target buck a few years back dropped both of his sheds in the area where I knew he traveled through. I would have found them barely scuffed by the timber rats , but I forgot to walk a logging trail. A few weeks later I went back and their they laid three feet apart and chewed up by the squirrels. I was sick but excited at the same time. Right side scored a little over 78" and left was over 75". He sported an easy 20" inside spread. First typical boone and crockett deer I ever went after. One of these days I will restore his antlers and get a cape for him and do a shoulder mount.
Thats a great story right there. Congrats on finding the other side and its in really good shape too!
Great story Danno! Too bad he didn't live long enough for you to get a chance to hunt him, but you did get some history with his sheds, and a great story to share with us. Congrats to both of you!
That's awesome crick, if I found those, I'd buy one of the mountain mikes replica skulls to mount them on. They only cost $40, and it'd be a cool way for your son to display them.
Very cool find Dan and great story with your boy finding one side. Shame the buck is dead but you both will have that story and the sheds to share.
