Question, do coyotes bury their food? I was out checking trail cams and I found a spot in the snow where it looked like a scuffle had taken place. I went over to investigate and found some feathers and a mound of snow in the middle of the scuffle spot. Sure enough, there was a pheasant that had been buried in the snow. I found the tracks that were leading up to and leaving the spot, but they were mostly drifted over, because it is so windy, so I couldn't really tell what type of animal made the tracks or how large they were. We have a good number of coyotes on the property, so I'm assuming it was a coyote. But I've tried a few google searches to see if coyotes do in fact bury food, and I haven't found much.

My guess is big cat. I maybe lying to you, but I beleive Bobcats will bury food sometimes. But I'm not an expert on yotes, but I wouldn't think that they would bury it, since they are like most dogs and can't wait to eat.

Bobcat for sure. Found a fawn killed by a bobcat a couple weeks ago. The snow was pretty hard and there wasn't much grass around, but it did try to cover it up a bit. Bobcat tracks all around it. Two days later the carcass was pretty much cleaned up. Cats always try to bury the kill.

This is the carcass, uncovered after everything else cleaned it up.

Funny that you guys mention cats, because I had a hunch that it could be a cat, but the more logical side of me was assuming coyote. I hunt in a spot that doesn't normally have bobcats or mountain lions (southeastern Wisconsin), but 2 weeks ago I was out hunting and came across a set of what appeared to be big cat tracks. I was surprised, but didn't think much of it, figuring whatever it was may just be passing through the area. I did put up a trail cam facing the spot where the pheasant is burried, so hopefully I'll get a picture of the culprit.

Nice! Be sure to share your findings!

I didn't have an extra trail cam with me at the time, or I would have done the same thing.

I'll be checking the trailcams this weekend and I'll post my findings in this thread.

Never seen a song dog bury anything especially that small. Cat sounds much more likely.

Could be a coyote since my German Shepherd likes to bury bones that we give 'em but cats are more known to bury what they catch. If you get a photo, share!

I should add that there were no visible wounds on the pheasant, and I examined it well. It looked like it may have died of a broken neck.
