I bought a used bow and i'm planning to have the strings and cables replaced. I would much rather install a peep sight myself rather than pay for someone else. IS it safe to spread the string and put a peep in or should i have someone use a bow press?

How do you plan on separating the string to install the peep?

You say you're having the strings and cables replaced. I'd recommend getting the shop that performs the work to install the peep for you. Don't risk damaging your new string trying to separate it. I doubt they would even charge you for that anyway.

The shop I have down here charges $2 to place a peep without a bow press and $12 with a bow press. I was planing on using a tool like the one fitz showed. I also read some wear that the smooth long handle of toe nail clippers work too and dont damage the string.

I have one of the string separators that Fitz recommended but I still always press my bow before installing a peep. I just feel that tool it's a little rough on the string. It will work though. Good luck!

    I've used it w/ & w/o a press. I use a ratchet press.

My Zebra String needed to be pressed so I could separate the string correctly, but my Metrao string does fine without the press.

I'd recommend using a press, will be a lot better job.
