Greetings - I'm hunting new land this year and have never had this problem before. I will have a long drive to get back to civilization where I can drop the deer off for processing. Do others pack the carcass with ice for the drive? My only concern is if the temp is up 60+ and it's 2-3 hours before I can drop it off somewhere. If I pack it with ice, am I safe for awhile? Even overnight? Thanks and good luck.
I quarter and take all meat and put in a cooler covered with ice. That is usually good for a few days, obviously adding ice as needed.
I agree 100%. Quartering a deer is easier/faster then skinning; however, get it done before the deer gets too stiff.
thanks for the tip. I think I'll pick up a Gambrel and take care of this in the field. wife will appreciate not having to haul the harvest in the back of the SUV as well.
In most states you need to leave evidence of sex so check the regs. Also I use BLOCK ice. It lasts alot longer.
In the past I have used bags of ice in the cavity. But I recently spent some time hunting down south with a family member and have found it is easy to quarter them up and put in in a cooler. Good luck and be safe!
