I think its the guy that gets woke up by a cricket on them Dodge Ram comercials , that goes over to his truck and grabs his bow and shoots out into the dark woods and hits the cricket .......now he has to be the best bow hunter ever .......lol

Who knows, times were different back then than now. If Fred Bear did things today that he did back then, he would be an outcast in the hunting society and people would scoff at him. But he did them way back when, so we idolize him for it.

Chuck Adams could be a candidate for how he originally pulled off the first super slam, refinancing his house mortgage and such to afford it. But going to great lengths to get to go hunting doesn't make you the best hunter once there.

IDK how to answer such a question, but I will throw this little bottle of gas on the fire. The best bowhunter IMO has to have a lot more experience than simply treestand hunting whitetails for consideration. Can they call in Elk on public land? Can they stalk in on high country mule deer? Can they pattern eastern hardwood whitetails and set stands that give them a good chance of intercepting a good buck? Can they tough out the cold and sludge threw the mountains chasing dogs on a mountain lion hunt for 10 days straight? Can they have the fortitude to actually even draw their bow when staring at a 10 ft brown bear just 15 yards away?

Sitting in a treestand isn't my definition of the best bowhunter. Maybe the best deer hunter.

Thats right Steve and every one has the same opportunity to kill the same deer, thats what makes it so awesome.

Back country I have heard of grousheaven. I grew up watching freds hunts on tv. He was probably the nicest guys ever, but to me you gota be good at whitetails to be the best bow hunter ever. If you watch the old hunts up to Alaska, everyone in the hunting crew was an owner of a company that Fred needed to push his product, he made everyone think that they needed a compound, much like mathews did with the single cam in the 90s.

Definetly not just one person out there can be called the best bow hunter ever but if I had to pick a TV personality it would be Tred Barta.
    Hunts with a long bow.
Is now in a wheelchair and still continues to hunt with a long bow and could really care less how big his kill is or if he even gets it.
If it is someone we personally know I would have to say my uncle who passed this life on to me and if he was still here I would thank him everyday.

In all honesty, Fran and Scott kill monster mature "target" free range everyday layperson bucks EVERY year.

What more could you ask for in the bowhunting world?

Lets just say I am a big fan of Greg Miller.
Throw Higgins and Eberhart's in there also.
    Add Bill Winke too.

Damn I keep editing this so I will add that even some of the fellas on here of which ive learned a ton from.
I thank you!!!!! Special shout out to Willand!

As for public lands Wi sure does have a lot to offer and I need to take advantage of it more often.

Bow Hunter Fred Bear, but if you looked at just hunter and what they did for the sport of hunting it would be Theodore Roosevelt.
