I am pretty excited I just got my non resident Kansas archery tag in the mail yesterday. I was hoping to go to Iowa, but when I did not draw a tag I decided to go on a DIY archery hunt in Kansas with a few friends. We will be hunting in unit 14 and 8. I dont know much about the area, but the guys I am going with said there are some really good bucks around there. The good part is this guy never jokes about big bucks.
Good luck with you hunt. Since your friends have either hunted the area before or are more familiar with it... are you going to be hunting private or public land ?? I know a couple other guys on a different forum who travel to Kansas every year. The one leases and will run trail cameras in the summer and fall. I am not sure what units they hunt in but they get pictures of some very big bucks. He had also shot a 140 - 150 class buck a few years back. The other guy's dad shot a buck that grossed in the 190's. The guy himself shot a 150+ class buck a year or two before that. I am almost positive that they hunted private also. I can see what units they hunt to see if they hunt 14 or 8 or are at least familar with them. Maybe they would have some info on the units that would help you. Tim
Def a state thats on my radar to hunt.... I would love to go out there on a DIY hunt.... The amount of hunters compared to deer there is insane compared to Ohio were I hunt. Theres tons of good public hunting out there also which is where I was looking at going. What dates are you going out Tom?
Yes, here in Ks it is deffinitely Freak Nasty heaven. I hope to tag a monster this year but unless I get access to private land, I will be trying it on public land this year for the first time.
14 & 8 covers a lot of area. The flint hills go through a lot of it. There's been a steady increase of hunters on public land though... so it might take a while to find a descent area that's not getting pounded. But if you have friends that know the area already or are hunting private then the hardest part is done. Good Luck.
This is going to be on Public ground. I do not know the area but the guys I am going with do. Sounds like there are some real bruisers running around there. I am leaving November 8th for this hunt, so I better get my tag here in MN spoken for before that.:D
going to kansas for the second time this year. I hunt on some private ground in zone 5. Shot what I consider a nice buck on the last night last year. I am going to hold out for a bigger one this year.
I'd stay north in those units if I were you. South is bone dry right now and crops are hurting pretty bad. Deer I'm seeing are suffering and skinny. Crying shame. We need rain in a bad way, especially south central and southwest KS. May be a year for hunting water holes. I wish you the best and hope you find a nice one and at least get to enjoy our state. Good luck!
Joey, did we ever get into any of the Flint Hills when I was there shedding and was any of the ground we shed hunted public? I thought we hit one public piece.. maybe we didn't ?
Got drawn for Iowa this year ! But I have decided to go to Kansas next year and hunt Public land . May take several years to get find a decent place to hunt but it will be worth it !
We were right on the edge of the Flint Hills... which go through a lot of the state. Everything we walked was on was private, except a little WIHA(Walk in Hunting Acces).
This sounds like it will be an awsome time! Good luck. Ive been wanting to hunt my home state but havent yet (where i was born).
I hunted fort rilely last year. There are some big bucks in there but there is also alot of hunters. Good luck
