I got this doe on cam several times. It appears that she has a wound (healing) in her ear. When I magnify the pic it looks like it was made by a 4-blade broadhead. What do you think?
I was just talking to a "bowhunter" the other day that told me his preferred shot at a doe is a head shot. He went with the no wasted meat argument. I told him my theory about the entire deer being wasted by an errant wounding shot to the jaw. I didn't hold back on letting him know how irresponsible I thought that shot placement is. So I wouldn't be surprised.
If it is an arrow wound, it doesn't mean the hunter was aiming at the head. Lots of things can go wrong to cause an errant shot. Just saying. I've seen a few deer with bullet holes in their ears, but only one with an arrow. The arrow was still stuck in the doe's ear. I have no idea how that could happen. Very strange sight. Here's a young buck (dropped antlers) that was shot in the ear by a neighbor. It was a running shot. When it shopped, he could see it bleeding from the ear. This photo was taken about 2 weeks later. He was the first to drop his antlers of the bucks we knew of. He grew into a decent 2 year old. He was easy to spot, obviously, but we never saw him again after the season started.
Yeah Vito, I thought about that. Misjudging yardage or a case of the nerves could be a cause. That could have been a quartering away shot that went way high. God knows i've blown my share of shots!
How much waste is there w/ an arrow? Or was this guy gun hunting? I do know gun hunters who shoot at the neck.
That was one of my arguments to the guy. A broadhead through the vitals even with a passthrough isn't goint to waste any meat to speak of.
I killed a doe this year with a slice in one ear. Don't know if it was an arrow or what but something very sharp sliced through the edge.
My BIL shot a doe with the same. The hole was at least the size of a nickel. Who knows for sure where they were aiming. Deer are amazingly fast. Anything could happen in the right situation.
